Joe Lovizio earned the 2013 season's first shutout for the Vassar College baseball team as the Brewers scored five runs in the first and five runs in the ninth for a 10-0 win over Cairn University Thursday afternoon.
Sophomore first baseman
Kyle Casey was the first Brewer to make base off a singled bunt that lagged in one spot between Cairn's pitcher and catcher. After junior designated hitter

Jason Garfinkel was hit by a pitch from Cairn's Tyson Rohrs, junior left fielder
Parker Werline walked, bringing in Casey for Vassar's winning run.
The Brewers opened their season with a 1-0 record and will next play Medaille College at 9:30 am on Friday, March 15. The Highlanders fall to 1-9 on their still early season as they next face Sewanee: The University of the South on Friday, March 15 at 9:30 am.
Junior second baseman
Dave Robbins singled to left field after Casey scored, driving in Zaziski and Garfinkel while advancing to second on the attempted throw-out at home. Senior right fielder
Sean Morash hit a sacrificed fly to centerfield, scoring Werline, followed by senior catcher
A.J. Kim driving in Robbins off a single to center and giving the Brewers the 5-0 lead at the end of the first.
The Brewer defense held strong for nine innings. The closest that the Highlanders came to giving the Brewers a scoring scare was at the bottom of the sixth when Chad Hollinger singled up the middle and Caleb Lang followed suit with a similar single up the middle. Lovizio struck out Kyle Parisi and Luis Cologne grounded out to senior shortstop
Mike Perrone, ending the scare and leaving two stranded on the bases.
Vassar added another five runs in the ninth inning with Cairn having no hopes of a comeback when senior pitcher
Lawrence Flicker closed out the game on the mound, striking out three Highlanders.
11 players in total were walked today for Vassar. Zaziski led the Brewers, going 3-for-5 with two RBI's and one double. Garfinkel also walked away with a double on his 2-for-5 day. Lovizio went six innings today, retiring eight batters and only giving up four hits. Senior
Max Frankel pitched one inning with one strikeout while Flicker finished the last two innings, sitting three.
Rohrs took the loss today, pitching six innings himself allowing five earned runs, while striking out one Brewer and walking four. Hollinger went 2-for-4 today while Kenneth Searle had a double.
“Today was a good start for our first day outside," head coach
Jon Martin said. "It's always good to open a season with a win. We have some things to improve on, but we'll take it and move onto tomorrow."
