Brewers Second Half Rally Falls Short In 63-60 Loss To RIT

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 9, 2013) – The Vassar College men's basketball team rallied in the second half of a physical rematch against Liberty League opponent, Rochester Institute of Technology, but fell short in a 63-60 loss in the final seconds of play at the Athletics & Fitness Center Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Alex Snyder tied his career highs in scoring and rebounds, going 9-10 from the floor and 1-2 from the free throw line for 19 points and pulling down 11 defensive and six offensive rebounds for 17. Snyder scored last scored 19 points against Bard College on January 19 of this year and pulled down 17 boards in the season-opener against NYU-Polytechnic on November 16 in the Vassar Tip-Off Tournament.

The Brewers fall to 7-16 and 3-11 in the Liberty League, finishing their home schedule. They will next travel to Skidmore College on Friday, February 15 at 8:00 pm and then to Union College the next day at 4:00 pm.

Being down 53-40 with 9:35 left in the second half, the Brewers went on an 18-7 run in an effort to close the gap, 60-58 with 2:21 remaining. RIT pulled further away with a free throw from Mike D'Amico and another pair from Eric Travis, making it a five-point game, 63-58.

Snyder drove to the basket for a layup on the next possession and bringing the Brewers within three. He then pulled down a defensive rebound off a missed free throw from Desmond Scott. Snyder found sophomore guard Curtis Smith open near half court with the clock down to three seconds. Smith went to put up the game-tying 3-pointer but unfortunately, was called for traveling with .06 seconds remaining.

RIT got things rolling in the first half with a 17-5 run in the first eight minutes. The Tigers hit 14-27 (51.9%) from the field and 5-8 (62.5%) from beyond the arc in the first half but managed only 9-28 (32.1%) from inside of the arc and 2-7 (28.6%) from the 3-point line in the second half.

Jameel Balenton led the Tigers with a game-high 20 points. Smith added 15 points, going 3-4 from the 3-point arc and adding three baskets from the inside.

Senior guard Jon Herzog was honored in pregame ceremonies for Senior Day. He finished the game with two points, a game-high four assists and one block.
