Men's Volleyball In Buffalo For First UVC Crossover Matches

Vassar starts UVC play at Medaille on Saturday and Sunday.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 7, 2013) – Following a hard-fought loss to No. 6 nationally ranked Stevens, the No. 12 nationally ranked Vassar College men's volleyball team will travel to Medaille College for a United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover Tournament where the Brewers will face Penn State-Behrend, Nazareth and Hilbert.

Game Time: Saturday, February 9 at 11:00 am, 5:00 pm, and Sunday February 10 at 1:00 pm.

Vassar Men's Notes (1-2): The Brewers are ranked No. 12 in the national AVCA February 15 poll. Vassar is coming off a tough match against no. 6 ranked Stevens Institute of Technology. The Brewers came from behind to win the first set 25-27, but fell to Stevens in subsequent sets for a final 3-1 score (25-27, 25-12, 25-18, 25-15).

Stats: Freshman Reno Kriz leads the Brewers in kills with 33, hitting 0.261. Kriz earned 11 kills in his last match against Stevens. Senior Matt Elgin follows Kriz with 28 kills, hitting 0.295. Elgin also leads the team in blocks with 9. Senior setter John Konow has 85 set assists. Senior libero Christian La Du amassed 11 digs last weekend for 29 over the season, placing him just three short of tying the Vassar all-time record for career digs. Kyle Giunta '08 holds current record with 994.

Penn State-Behrend Notes (2-4): The Lions opened the season 1-2 with a win against Penn State-Altoona (3-0) and losses to Carthage (3-0) and Thiel (3-2). Penn-State Behrend most recently swept Penn State-Altoona last Saturday, winning 25-12, 25-14, 26-24.

Junior Grant Kocher leads the team in kills with 68. Sophomore Ty Sheehan leads the team in digs with 35, and follows Kocher with 60 kills. Senior Evan Fullerton has 168 set assists. 

Next Up: The Lions will travel to Buffalo, NY to face D'Youville College on Wednesday February 13 at 7:00 pm.

Nazareth Notes (5-0): The Golden Flyers, who have earned a  No. 6 ranking in the national AVCA February 15 poll, are undefeated on the season. Nazareth is coming off victories over Southern Vermont (3-0), Medaille (3-0), Emmanuel (3-0) and MIT (3-2) in the Golden Flyer Tournament last weekend.

Tim Zybert leads the team in kills with 39, and is followed by Luke Lawatsch with 33 kills. EJ Wells-Spicer has earned 144 set assists. Dan Mowry leads the team with 22 digs.

Next Up: After this weekend, the Golden Flyers travel to Elmira, NY to play Elmira College on February 13 at 6:00 pm.

Hilbert Roster | Hilbert 2013 Schedule Hilbert 2013 Statistics

Hilbert Notes (2-5): The Hawks enter the UVC Crossover with losses in both matches at home last weekend. Hilbert was defeated by Penn State-Altoona 3-1 and by D'Youville College 3-0.

Adam Weaver leads the team in kills with 104. David Mellerski has earned 174 set assists, and Ryan Ratajczak has leads the team with 84 digs.

Next Up: The Hawks will travel to Greenville, PA to face Thiel College on Tuesday February 12 at 7:00 pm.

Coaches: Vassar is coached by Robert Wolter, who is in his second season.

Penn State-Behrend is coached by Phil Pisano, in his second season.

Nazareth is coached by Cal Wickens, in his 10th season.

Hilbert is coached by William Schultz in his third season.
