UNION, NJ (February 27, 2013) – Leading 2-1 after the first period, the Kean University men's lacrosse team scored seven straight goals in the second period for a 9-1 lead and held off an offensive push by Vassar to register a 20-10 victory on Wednesday evening.
Thanks to the play of freshman
Noah Parson, who scored four goals in the game, the Brewers were able to come within 12-7 late in the third period. The Cougars, however, had too much firepower, adding six straight goals to make the deficit too much for Vassar to overcome at 18-7. Kean scored the last three goals of the third period and first five to start the final stanza. The Brewers scored the last three of the game.
The Brewers drop to 1-1 on the season, while Kean improves to 1-1. Vassar will next host Manhattanville on Saturday, March 2 at Weinberg Field at 3:00 p.m. Kean will host Western Connecticut on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
At one point, Vassar trailed 11-2, but the Brewers notched back-to-back goals from freshman
Shane Flattery and
Max Herman, and pulled within 12-7 following tallies from sophomore
Scott Brekne, Parson and fellow freshman
Colin Cederna.
Kean had 50 shots on goal compared to 32 for Vassar.
Beside four goals from Parsons, Herman added two goals and an assist. Cederna had three assists.
In goal, junior
Andrew Nicol made 18 saves for Vassar.
Ben Lehr saw his first action of the season as Nicol's backup and allowed two goals.
Scott Brekne had eight ground balls.
Kean used four goalies, with starter Lane Zierten getting victory allowing two goals and making two saves.
Rick Cheifitz was the offensive stalwart for Kean, notching six goals and two assists.
