Men's Hoops' Comeback Thwarted In Final Two Minutes, 67-56 By Skidmore

Tonight was the sixth time this season that Curtis Smith has led the Brewers in scoring.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (February 15, 2013) – A 9-0 run with 2:52 left allowed Skidmore College to pull away from a Vassar College men's basketball comeback, putting Friday night's game away, 67-56 in Liberty League action.

With 8:43 remaining in regulation, the Brewers fought back from a 53-46 deficit, coming within two points, 58-56 with the help of an 11-5 run. Sophomore guard Curtis Smith highlighted the run with a jumper, layup and two free throws while freshman forward Nick Johnson added a 3-pointer and two free throws. Smith led the Brewers with 13 points, going 4-4 from the free throw line, 1-1 from the 3-point arc and added another three field goals. Aldin Medunjanin led the Thoroughbreds with 17 points.

The Brewers fall to 3-12 in the Liberty League and 7-17 on the season. Vassar will finish its season tomorrow evening at Union College at 4:00 pm. Skidmore improves to 9-6 in League play and 15-9 on the season. Liberty League No. 4 Skidmore will next face No. 3 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute tomorrow at 4:00 pm at RPI.

Skidmore's Connor Merrill hit a layup with 2:52 remaining, starting the game-ending run. Medunjanin put in back-to-back free throws followed by two free throws from Merrill and one from Sakhile Sithole.

Each team saw eight lead changes during the course of the game and a total of seven instances where the game was tied. Skidmore got its largest lead of the night at the end of the 9-0 run.

Vassar had a season high from the free throw line, going 17-20 (85.0%) with perfect performances from Smith, freshman guard Erikson Wasyl (4-4), senior guard Jon Herzog (2-2) and junior guard Sam Rappaport (1-1).
