Senftleber Leads Brewer Women Past St. Joseph’s (LI) Wednesday Evening

Box Score

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 4, 2013) – Senior forward Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) topped all scorers with 23 points, leading the No.25 ranked Vassar College women's basketball team to an emphatic 88-41 victory over St. Joseph's College (LI) in non-conference play.

All eight players dressed for the Brewers (5-0) hit a field goal, as Vassar walked away with its largest win since January 10, 2012 when VC knocked off Bard College by 60 points. Senftleber scored 19 of her game-best 23 points in the second stanza, adding a game and career-high 19 rebounds in the process.

The contest was never really in doubt for the Brewers, who led for all but 14 seconds of the game when the score was knotted at two. After that tie, Vassar went on a quick 11-2 run, capped by a layup from Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) to take a 13-4 advantage.

Vassar's lead would balloon to as much as 23 points with 3:17 remaining in the first stanza on a layup from Zoe Walker (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School), and would enter the locker room with a 40-20 advantage. Drakeley had 15 first-half points to pace the Brewers, as VC forced St. Joseph's (0-5) into 26.5 percent (9-34) shooting from the floor.

In the second half, Vassar continued to increase its edge thanks to superior defense, breezing to the non-league victory. The win marked the third straight campaign that the Brewers have started 5-0, and are now 21-8 in the first semester of the last four seasons. VC is also 13-1 in its last two years before the calendar changed to the New Year.

Senftleber was 7-17 from the floor, making all nine of her shots from the line, with eight of her 19 caroms coming on the offensive end. Drakeley was 9-17 from the floor, corralling eight boards and four steals, while Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy) added 13 points, eight assists and three steals.

The breakout performance of the night came from junior guard Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston), who tallied 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals, all career highs. Sophomore forward Rose Serafini (Milton, Ontario, Canada/Milton District) also picked up a career-best 13 rebounds to go with seven points, as Vassar outrebounded the Eagles 65-41 and posted a 34-6 advantage in second-chance points.

Vassar scored 50 of its 88 points within the painted area, as it made 42.7 percent (35-82) from the field on the evening. VC made 14 of its 18 attempts from the charity stripe, and turned the ball over just 13 times while handing out 17 assists.

St. Joseph's was paced on the offensive end by the 14 points from forward Danielle Hamlin and Christina Cohen added 13 points. Katie McGarrell also posted six points and a team-leading nine rebounds for the Eagles, who made just two of their 32 three-point attempts (6.3 percent).

The No.25 Brewers will now have six days to get ready for their toughest test of the young season, as the No. 3 Red Hawks of Montclair State University come to the Athletics and Fitness Center (AFC) Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. in a huge early season clash of ranked squads.
