SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (November 6, 2013) – The Vassar College field hockey team played in its first-ever Liberty League Tournament contest Wednesday evening, but couldn't get by No. 12 Skidmore College and fell to the top-seeded Thoroughbreds 4-0.
Despite the loss, the Vassar College field hockey team had one of its best seasons in program history. In 2013, the Brewers finished with the second-most wins during a campaign with 11, also earning three or more Liberty League wins for only the third time since joining the league in 2000-01.
The high-powered Skidmore offense got on the board early on, putting the Thoroughbreds (16-3) up 1-0 just 2:30 into the game. SC's Sam Skott took a pass from Pauline Searles, and tucked it past senior keeper
Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) for her 12
th goal of the year. This chance came right after Vassar nearly took the lead 1:20 into the game on a shot by senior
Caroline Stanton (Nantucket, MA/Nantucket).
The Vassar defense would hold firm the rest of the opening period, thanks to nine saves from Brelis. The Brewers had some solid chances, but
Haley Merritt (Northport, NY/Northport) and
Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) were both denied by Skidmore's Haley McDougall.
After the break, the Thoroughbreds quickly struck on a goal by Searles to make the game 2-0. Just over a minute later, the Brewers had their best scoring chance of the game, but a
Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) shot was knocked off the line by Thoroughbred defender Jenn Hanks. SC would tack on two more goals down the stretch to put the game away.
The Brewers (11-7) got a season-high 16 saves from Brelis, who finishes her career as the all-time saves leader at Vassar College with 353 stops. The senior net minder also ends her career as the all-time leader in wins and shutouts. Senior
Kerrin Poole (Scituate, MA/Thayer Academy) had a defensive save for the Brewers, her eighth of her career, which puts her fifth all-time on that list.
The hosts outshot the Brewers 28-7 on the contest, and earned a 15-4 advantage in penalty corners. Vassar did do a good job on the Liberty League points leaders Kelly Blackhurst and Dani DeGregory, each of who were held scoreless on the contest. It marked only the second time all season that has happened. The win was the 200
th in the career for Skidmore head coach Beth Hallenbeck, as she now has a 200-57 (.778) record in 13 seasons.
Searles finished the game with a goal and an assist for the Thoroughbreds, while Hanks and Krista Lamoreaux each also tallied for SC. McDougall ended with four stops in the cage for Skidmore, which will now take on the winner of the University of Rochester and Wiliam Smith College Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY in the Liberty League Championships.
