Vassar Squash Finishes Play At Liberty League Championships Sunday

    CANTON, NY (November 24, 2013) – The Vassar College squash team battled two of the top teams in the country Sunday, falling to No. 5 University of Rochester and No. 29 Hobart College, both by scores of 9-0 in Liberty League Championship action from St. Lawrence University.

    In the first match of the day, the depth of the fifth-ranked Yellowjackets was too much for the Brewers as Rochester earned all nine of the matches. David Garfinkel (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) played both the second and third sets tight at No. 3, earning 15 combined points, while Alan Darer (Chestnut Ridge, NY/Rockland Co.) was also in his match at No. 6 singles before dropping his contest 11-6, 11-6 and 11-6.

    Senior Connie Zheng (Rancho Palos Verdes, CA/Palo Verdes Peninsula) competed well at No. 9 before falling in straight sets. In the second and final match of the day, the Brewers were not able to pick up a point as Hobart earned the 9-0 win.

    Senior captain Ricardo Espinosa(Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano De Quito) fell in straight sets, though he nearly won set two winning nine points, and Juan Fernandez competed at No. 5 singles and chalked up 17 points in his match.

    Vassar has been dealing with injuries all season, as No. 1 player Vincent Mencotti (Birmingham, MI/Brother Rice) and Daniel Doctor (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) are both out currently out.

    Host St. Lawrence University won the Liberty League title, as the Saints earned a win over Rochester in the final match of the tournament. Vassar was 1-3 on the weekend, taking home fourth place, while Hobart placed third and Bard College earned fifth place. For the tournament, eight of the ten contests ended in a 9-0 win.

    The Brewers will now have a few weeks off before heading to the Wesleyan University Round Robin Sunday, December 8.
