Vassar Squash Splits Pair at Liberty League Championships Saturday

                CANTON, NY (November 23,2013) – The No. 59 ranked Vassar College squash team earned a 8-1 victory over No. 54 Bard College at the Liberty League Championships Saturday, but was felled by No. 6 St. Lawrence University 9-0 in the nightcap.
 
                In the opening match of the afternoon for the Brewers, senior Ricardo Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano de Quito) won his first two sets 11-8 and 11-9, before falling 11-9 in the third game. Espinosa rebounded to win the fourth set 11-8 for VC. Fellow senior Kiet Phun (Lincoln, NE/Lincoln) also picked up a win at No. 2 singles, as he knocked off Jack Smith of Bard College 11-6, 11-5 and 11-5.
 
                At No. 3 singles, Daniel Doctor (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) was winning but had to retire after suffering a lower body injury. That was the only point Bard (0-9) would earn though, as David Garfinkel (Larchmont, NY/Mamaroneck) earned his No. 4 battle with scores of 11-7, 8-11, 11-9 and 11-4. Junior Ryan Kurtzman (Chicago, IL/Latin School of Chicago) cruised in straight sets at No. 5, as he surrendered just eight points on the match.
 
                Juan Fernandez (Colonia Chimalistac, Mexico/United Wold College Costa Rica) knocked off Bard's Haya Dandis in three sets with scores of 6, 3, and 6, and Alan Darer (Chestnut Ridge, NY/Rockland Co.) defeated Stephanie Parent 11-2, 11-2 and 11-2. Freshman Carly Scher (Penn Valley, PA/Herriton) moved her overall record for the year to 3-3 with a three-game win over Yvie Yao, posting scores of 11-0, 11-2 and 11-3.
 
                In the match against St. Lawrence, the No. 6 ranked Saints showed their depth by sweeping the nine matches against Vassar. Garfinkel picked up 14 points over the three-set match for Vassar, while Darer and Scher each picked up 11 points in their losses. St. Lawrence moved to 2-0 on the season, whle the Brewers dropped to 1-3 after their loss to St. Lawrence.
 
                The Brewer squash team will continue their play at the Liberty League Championships tomorrow afternoon in action from St. Lawrence.
