NEW PALTZ, NY (November 21, 2013) – Sophomore guard
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) stuffed the stat sheet with 14 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals in leading the Vassar College women's basketball team past host New Paltz Thursday evening in non-conference play from the Hawk Center.
The sophomore's big game was huge for the Brewers, who moved to 3-0 for the third consecutive season. Drakeley's double-double was her second of the campaign, while her eight steals tied for the school-record by matching Bea Milligan's eight thefts set November 18, 2001 against Wesley College.
New Paltz (0-3) opened with the game's first four points, but VC responded with a 9-0 run, capped off by a jumper from senior
Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy). VC upped its lead to eight at 18-10 with 6:46 to play in the opening period, but New Paltz roared back with a 13-2 run of its own to take a 23-20 advantage.
Drakeley finished the half with five straight points for Vassar, nailing a three-pointer with 15 seconds to play in the period to give VC a 25-23 lead at the break. Drakeley had six of her eight steals in the first half, leading the Brewers with 12 points at intermission.
The visiting Brewers led by as many as 12 points at 46-34 midway through the second half, but the Hawks went on another 13-2 run to pull to within one at 48-47 following a lay-up from Christine Rivera. Showing their poise, the Brewers got back-to-back trifectas from Drakeley and
Michelle Foreman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) to push their advantage back up to five.
Down the stretch Vassar's defense locked in, allowing the Hawks only one made field goal over the last 4:18 of regulation in pulling away for the victory. Matsuoka led all scorers with 15 points, grabbing five rebounds to go with four assists. Junior
Michaela Janowski (Stratham, NH/Exeter Area) played well, notching eight points, while also posting seven rebounds and four helpers.
Senior forward
Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington) was five-of-10 from the floor, finishing with 12 points, and Foreman came off the bench to tally seven points. Vassar shot the lights out in the second half, going 14-of-24 (58.3 percent). The Brewers made 23-of-56 from the field on the evening, and made nine-of-10 from the line. VC did struggle holding onto the ball, turning it over 27 times, but won the rebounding battle 42-37.
New Paltz was led by Goldie Harrison and her 12 points and five steals, while Courtney Irby added eight points and 11 rebounds. NP hit 33.8 percent from the field, but made just three of its 11 shots from behind the arc.
The Brewers will get six days off before heading to Wesleyan University next Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in more non-conference action.
