Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 16, 2013) – The Vassar College women's basketball team put five players in double-digits, led by the 19 from senior
Cydni Matsuoka (Sacramento, CA/John F. Kennedy), earning the 2013 VC Tip Off Tournament title with a resounding 75-42 win over Brooklyn College Saturday.
Vassar College (2-0) and its opponent were back and forth over the first twenty minutes, as the game featured seven ties. With the score tied at 25 with 3:28 remaining in the opening period, VC ended the half on a 7-0 spurt, fueled by four points from
Hannah Senftleber (Burlington, VT/Burlington).
The hosts were led in the opening period by Senftleber and her 10 points, as the Brewers shot 40 percent (12-30) en route to the 32-25 halftime lead. After the intermission, Vassar turned up its defense for the second straight day, holding the Bulldogs to 26.9 percent shooting and only 17 second-half points.
On the other hand, the Brewer shooters caught fire, making 18 of their 31 second-half shots to pull away. Another key to the win for Vassar was its efficiency with the ball, turning the rock over just 12 times all game. The turning point was towards the end of the first half through the first 4:35 of the second stanza, as Vassar outscored Brooklyn 19-2 over a period of 8:48.
Matsuoka chalked up her point total on 8-15 shooting, as she finished 3-7 from downtown along with dishing out six assists. Senftleber posted her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 13 rebounds, adding two steals, while
Caitlin Drakeley (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug) collected 11 points and six caroms.
Junior
Nyah Berg (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) had 10 points and six assists, and fellow junior
Michelle Foreman (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) came off the bench to make five of her eight field goals for 11 points. Freshman
Zoe Walker (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) contributed eight boards, and
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) had seven points, four steals and a pair of assists.
Senftleber earned Tournament MVP honors after averaging 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds over the two-day affair. Matsuoka also picked up All-Tournament Team accolades after scoring 15 points per game, and handing out 7.5 assists over this weekend. VC shot 49.2 percent from the floor Saturday, making 5-14 (35.7 percent) from downtown.
Megan Campbell led the Bulldogs offensively with 10 points, and Carissa Williams and Nacirema Mann each had nine points and five boards apiece for Brooklyn. BC shot 32.1 percent on field goals, but was only 1-18 from behind the three-point line. Vassar also outrebounded the athletic Bulldogs, 44-33. Jaclyn Grasso earned All-Tournament Team for Brooklyn.
In earlier tournament action, Wellesley knocked off Plymouth State University 53-37. Meghan Sargent (Wellesley) and Taylor Perry (PSU) were both named to the All-Tournament squad.
Vassar College will now head across the river Thursday evening at 8:00 pm to battle the Hawks of New Paltz.
