Vassar Squash Drops Pair At Haverford College Saturday Afternoon

HAVERFORD, PA – The Vassar College squash team traveled to Haverford College to battle both the Fords and Lehigh University, but dropped both matches 9-0 in non-conference play Saturday afternoon.

Against host Haverford College, the Brewers played well but suffered from being short-handed due to key injures. Senior Ricardo Espinosa (Quito, Ecuador/Colegio Americano de Quito) dropped his No. 1 match 4, 4, 5, while senior Kiet Phun (Lincoln, NE/Lincoln) was tripped up in his No. 2 match 1, 0, 5.

The best match against the Fords for Vassar came at No. 9, thanks to a great effort from Isabelle Bertram (Salt Lake City, UT/West). Bertram dropped her first two sets 11-6 and 11-8, before rebounding to take set three, 11-7. Unfortunately, the freshman was unable to even the match at two in falling in four sets. Ryan Kurtzman (Chicago, IL/Latin School of Chicago) also battled at No. 5, but couldn't come away with a victory.

Against Lehigh University, the Brewers again battled but couldn't pick up an individual win. Espinosa won 16 points over the three sets, but fell 6, 6,4. Phun picked up a set win at No. 2, but lost 15-13 in the fourth set to fall in four, while Daniel Doctor (Portland, OR/Oregon Episcopal School) gutted out a tough first set 16-14 win at No. 3, dropping his match in four games.

Kurtzman was in his match the entire time, before falling at No. 5, and Alan Darer (Chestnut Ridge, NY/Rockland Co.) fell in one of the most entertaining matches of the day, losing in four sets, 11-9, 11-9, 15-13 and 11-4.

The Brewers will head to the Liberty League Championships next weekend at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY.
