First Half Offense Leads Brewer Field Hockey Past Hartwick Friday, 3-0

Box Score                ONEONTA, NY (October 4, 2013) – The Vassar College field hockey team scored on two of its seven first-half shots and cruised to a 3-0 win over host Hartwick College Friday evening in non-conference play.

The Brewers (5-4) upped their mark in out-of-conference contests to 5-2 on the season, and the victory marked the second consecutive season that Vassar has earned a win over the Hawks. VC wasted not pouring on the offense, earning a penalty corner just a minute into the game. In the 11th minute, the Brewers nearly took the lead, but an Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) clanged off the post.

Just about seven minutes later, the Brewers would take the lead for good with a goal from sophomore Lauren Wiebe (Chicago, IL/Francis W. Parker), as she redirected a shot from fellow sophomore Haley Merritt (Northport, NY/Northport). Vassar doubled its advantage at the 28:38 mark of the outing, as Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) netted her fifth tally of the season, ricocheting a shot off of the HC keeper for the tally.

The Brewers outshot their hosts 7-1 in the opening period, earning both penalty corners of the period. After halftime, VC came out strong and nearly extended its lead to three, but Hawk keeper Shannon Carter made back-to-back saves on freshman Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker) to keep the score 2-0.

In the 48th minute, the Hawks threatened to trim the deficit to one, but senior keeper Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) denied a pair of scoring chances for Hartwick. Vassar would close the scoring with 12:14 remaining, as senior Liz Raskopf (North Salem, NY/North Salem) netted her first goal of the season off an another assist from Merritt.

The Brewers got four saves from Brelis, who recorded her second shutout of the season. VC outshot its hosts 19-7, and earned eight penalty corners to just the five of the Hawks. Carter finished the game with five saves in cage for Hartwick.

Vassar is back on the road tomorrow afternoon, battling Morrisville State College at 1 p.m. in Morrisville, NY in a non-conference affair.
