POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 29, 2013) – Senior
Tina Caso (Carmel, NY/Carmel) notched her second goal of the game 7:16 into overtime to lift the Vassar College field hockey team past the University of Scranton 2-1 in non-conference play from Weinberg Field Tuesday.
The win was the second victory of the season in overtime for the Brewers, who move to 2-3 when playing in the extra session. Vassar now has the second-most wins in a season with 11, two short of the school record of 13 in a campaign.
The game was played mostly in the midfield, with the contest totaling just 14 shots between the two teams. Both defenses were stout throughout the outing, though the Royals (12-5) broke through for the game's first tally. At the 24:14 mark of the contest, Krista Osborne weaved her way through the Vassar (11-5) backfield and whipped a backhanded shot past senior
Maggie Brelis (Cambridge, MA/BB&N) for the 1-0 advantage.
After halftime, possession was back and forth, and even when the Brewers began to press late, shots were tough to muster. With just under 17 minutes to play, Scranton's Jessica Conroy had a great opportunity to make the score 2-0, but Brelis made a good save to maintain the deficit at one for Vassar.
Minutes later, VC pressured with a pair of penalty corners, and the second instance proved to be golden as Vassar knotted of the game thanks to Caso's 11
th of the season. Senior
Anna Schroeder (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) received the inserted pass, and dished to
Enya Cunningham (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg). Cunningham fired, and Caso deflected the shot into the cage to knot the score at one.
Down the stretch, sophomore
Bianca Zarrella (Leominster, MA/Leominster) had a nice chance, as did freshman
Hayley Beach (Latham, NY/Shaker), but Maria Begliomini was up to the task for the Royals.
In the extra session and with plenty of open space on the field as the teams battled seven aside, Vassar held most of the possession. Following a penalty corner, Schroeder gather a loose ball and shot her attempt into the circle. Begliomini's clearing attempt was missed, and Caso's stumbling shot trickled just inside the left post to give Vassar the win.
Despite allowing the one goal, the Brewer defense was stellar once again, as a defense led by Cunningham,
Catherine Fiore (Essex Falls, NJ/West Essex) and
Hilary McDonnell (Blue Bell, PA/The Springside School) helped extended the streak of allowing just one or fewer goals to eight contests. Brelis finished with two stops, while her counterpart Begliomini had two saves as well.
Schroeder finished with assists on both goals, and now has helped out on six of the last 10 strikes for Vassar. VC has earned wins in seven of its last eight, and has surrendered four goals in its last eight games. The Brewers outshot Scranton 9-5, and held a 10-6 advantage in penalty corners.
Vassar will finish its regular season Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. with a contest against the Hawks of New Paltz on Weinberg Field, before traveling to Skidmore College next Wednesday for the Liberty League Tournament at 2 p.m. in Saratoga Springs, NY.
