POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 26, 2013) – Freshman Emily Krebs (Corona Del Mar, CA/Corona Del Mar) gave the Vassar College women's soccer team the 1-0 win over Liberty League opponent Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.

Krebs got the game-winner at 41:35 when a long cross pass from freshman Kelsey Hamm (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) was kicked up in the air by an Engineer defender. As the high ball was coming down inside of RPI goalkeeper Alex Scholz's box, Sholz's attempt to grab the ball fell out of her hands, allowing Krebs the light header for the goal.

The Brewers had another chance early in the game for the lead when senior Gavriella Kaplan (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) took a shot at 11:13 that hit the crossbar. Brewer fans were disappointed when the shot was not credited as a goal despite the shot hitting the bottom of the crossbar and landing where what appeared to be across the line but due to the backspin on the ball, the play would have called for instant replay to see whether it was in or not.

Vassar had three excellent scoring chances in the second half against the Engineers' second keeper of the day, Steph Vargas. The first came when sophomore Kamaria Coley (Washington, DC/Academy of the Holy Cross) broke through defenders for a one-on-one situation with Vargas. Coley's shot from the right of the goal box went far left.

A similar instance happened later in the half when Kaplan had a one-on-two breakaway where her shot was tackled away from her before it could go further than a foot away from her by an RPI defender.

The Brewers offense kept the ball in Engineer territory while the defense was quick to get the ball out of Brewer Country, giving freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Tapolsky (Louisville, KY/Dupont Manual) a somewhat easy outing, having faced only six shots with two on goal that were easily saved.

The Brewers shot 12 times with four on goal. Vassar's physical play did not go unnoticed as they led RPI 20-9 in fouls. Vassar also was awarded three corner kicks compared to the Engineers' one.

The Brewers (7-7-2, 2-3-1 Liberty League) will next travel to Bard College on Tuesday, October 29 at 7:00 pm to face Hudson Valley rival and Liberty League opponent, Bard College. The Engineers (8-7-1, 3-4-0 Liberty League) will next host Skidmore College in league action on Wednesday, October 30 at 7:30 pm, rounding out their regular season.
