Field Hockey Downed By Manhattanville, 5-2, In Betty Richey Championship

Sophomore Dara Davis was one of three Brewers named All-Betty Richey.

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 8, 2012) – Manhattanville College scored three goals in a 12 minute span of the second half, and successfully kept Vassar off the scoreboard until 18 minutes were left in the game, en route to winning its second consecutive Betty Richey Championship 5-2, on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

The Valiants, who were outshot 25-19 by Vassar – and 14-5 in the first half alone – made the most of their opportunities in an effective offensive game. Manhattanville withstood an initial barrage of shots in the opening 25 minutes of the game and with six minutes to go until halftime swung the game's momentum with a goal by junior forward Amanda DeChent for a 1-0 lead. 

The loss drops Vassar to 2-1 on the season, while Manhattanville improves to 3-2. The Brewers will travel to Keystone on Tuesday, September 11 at 7 pm. Manhattanville next plays at William Smith on September 15.

After the Valiants built a 4-0 lead with 20 minutes to play, Vassar got on the board when freshman Bianca Zarella scored her second career goal, placed strategically in the bottom right corner, off an assist from junior Anna Schroeder at the 52 minute mark. With 11 minutes to play, junior Rachel Waldman tallied her
first goal of the season off a deflected save to bring Vassar within 5-2.

Manhattanville got three consecutive goals to start the second half from senior Melissa Gonclaves, senior Lindsey Stebenne and freshman Rylee McGuire. DeChent scored her second goal of the contest seven minutes prior to Waldman's goal.

Vassar junior goalie Maggie Brelis made seven saves in the contest. Junior Catherine Fiore had a defensive save.

Manhattanville got a 13 save performance from junior goalie Amy Hilton.

All-Betty Richey Tournament
Named to the All-Betty Richet Tournament team from Vassar were Fiore and sophomores Dara Davis and Enya Cunningham.
Manhattanville's Melissa Gonclaves was named Most Valuable Player and the Valiants place Dechent, Hilton, freshman Morgan Parsons, and junior Julie Esposito on the team.

Smith College, an 11-0 winner over Bay Path College in the consolation game, placed junior Allie Stein and sophomore Jenny Estes. Bay Path had junior Ruth Choate and sophomore Becca Feaster.
