POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 28, 2012) – The Vassar College women's soccer team battled to a tense double-overtime victory over St. Lawrence University 3-2 on a chilly Friday evening at Gordon Field.

In an even, offense-oriented game that saw both teams rack up 18 shots a piece, sophomore forward Chloe Wheeler scored the game-winning goal in the 107th minute with a long-range strike.

The Brewers, now 6-3 (1-1 Liberty League), will face Clarkson University at home on Saturday, September 29 at 2:00 pm. St. Lawrence, now 5-2 (0-1-1 Liberty League), will travel to Annandale-on-Hudson to face Bard College on Saturday, September 29 at 2:00 pm.

The Brewers got off to a fast start and opened scoring in just the fourth minute, when freshman forward Kamaria Coley received the ball off a deflected pass, made a run into the top of the box, and slotted the ball past the keeper and into the bottom ride side of the net.

Vassar's lead held for 25 minutes, until St. Lawrence forward Brooke Hessney took advantage of a deflected cross to tap the ball into the net from six yards out in the 29th minute.

The score remained tied until the 63rd minute, when Saints forward Mackenzie Collins played a through-ball past the defense to forward Stephanie Sayward, who drove a low, hard shot from the edge of the box into the bottom left corner.

Vassar narrowly missed finding the equalizer just two minutes later, when junior forward Gavriella Kaplan drilled a shot just wide of the upper left corner from 12 yards out.

The Brewers finally found the goal they needed with just three minutes to play when sophomore defender Ariel Bridges played the ball across the box to sophomore midfielder Kelsey Domb, who took a touch before skillfully curving the ball into the net from 14 yards out, sending the game into overtime.

The game remained tied throughout the nail-biting, sudden-death overtime until, with just three minutes left in the match, Kaplan played a through ball to Wheeler, who found open space and hammered the ball into the upper left corner of the net from 30 yards out, ending the game in dramatic fashion.

Senior goalkeeper Ali Higgins had six saves in the win for the Brewers, while Saints goalkeeper Kelsey West had five saves in the loss.
