SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (September 21, 2012) – Seeking its first win over Skidmore College since the 2000 season, the Vassar College field hockey team came excruciatingly close to a huge upset, falling to the No. 6 nationally-ranked Thoroughbreds, 3-2, on a penalty corner goal on the game's last play.
Skidmore fought back from a 2-1 deficit with 4:15 to play, scoring two goals in the final 1:47 of play. The winning tally came off a penalty corner – Skidmore's 35th of the contest and the game's final play – by freshman forward Dani DeGregory as the game clock struck 70:00.
“It wasn't a fluke that we lost 2-1 to Skidmore last year,” said head coach Cara Reese. “This team should not be underestimated, because we are a strong program. We didn't make it easy for the No. 6 team in the country and it could have been our victory today – it came down to the final play of the game. It's one of the best games we've had this season. This team is eager to get back on the field against St. Lawrence tomorrow.”
Vassar, now a strong 4-2, 0-1 on the season, will remain in Liberty League play, travelling to St. Lawrence for a 2:00 p.m. game on Saturday. Skidmore improves to 7-0, 2-0 and hosts Union at 2:00 p.m. The Thoroughbreds are unbeaten (5-0) at home.
Despite being outshot 31-10, the Brewers were effective offensively and just 4:15 from a huge upset. But over the final 4:15, Vassar went from leading the contest 2-1 on a goal by junior midfielder
Tina Caso at 65:45, to seeing Skidmore tie the contest at 2-2 at 68:23 and subsequently win the contest on the penalty corner at 70:00.
Caso notched Vassar's second goal – and her first of the season – at 65:45, scoring off a penalty corner that was directed from an assist by sophomore forward
Dara Davis.
But with just 1:37 to play, Skidmore tied the contest at 2-2 when junior defender Annie Weis tallied her second goal of the season.
Freshman forward
Lauren Wiebe, who had three of Vassar's five first half shots, connected on the game's first goal – and her first intercollegiate goal – with a tally from the top of the box with 19:10 until halftime.
Skidmore knotted the game 1-1 at the 56 minute mark when junior forward Kelly Blackhurst scored her 11th goal of the season off a redirect in front of the Vassar cage.
Vassar junior goalie
Maggie Brelis was particularly strong, making 16 saves, seven which came in the first half.
Skidmore sophomore goalie Haley McDougall had five saves.
