POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 19, 2012) – The Vassar College women's soccer team suffered a 4-2 loss to Western Connecticut State University on a sunny Wednesday evening at Gordon Field.

The contest marked Vassar's first home game of the season. The team's first six games were all on the road.

The Brewers, now 5-2 on the season, will travel to Troy, NY to face Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday at 6:30 pm. The Colonials, now 5-1-1, will face UMASS Dartmouth at home on Saturday at 5:00 pm.

Despite going down 3-0 in the first half, the Brewers battled back and narrowly missed tying the game in a hard-fought second half.

Western Connecticut struck first in the fifth minute, when Colonials forward Kelsey Chacho stole the ball deep in the Vassar half and made a run into the box to score in the upper right corner.

Western Connecticut doubled their lead in the 18th minute when forward Ariana D'Aurio beat several defenders to force senior goalkeeper Ali Higgins out of the net. Despite the aggressive rush Higgins could only manage to get one glove on the ball as it flew past her and into the net.

The third goal for Western Connecticut came in the 30th minute when Kelsey Chacho sent a through ball past the Vassar defense to Ariana D'Aurio, who turned and scored to put the Colonials up 3-0.

Vassar managed to take one back in the final minute of the first half, when a well-placed corner from sophomore midfielder Sarah Bourenane found sophomore forward Kelsey Domb in the box. Domb kicked the ball out to freshman midfielder Lucy Brainerd, who skillfully struck the ball into the upper right corner from the edge of the box.

The Brewers kept up the momentum after the break, and the pressure paid off when they got their second goal just two minutes into the second half. Sophomore forward Chloe Wheeler drove past several defenders and drilled a low shot off the outstretched arms of Colonials goalkeeper Caitlin Avery to cut the deficit to a single goal.

Vassar narrowly missed tying the game in the 65th minute, when a free kick from Bourenane from 25 yards out was tipped just over the bar by Avery. But despite their best efforts the Brewers couldn't find a breakthrough. A Colonials goal in the 77th minute from forward Camille Lawson ended the game at 4-2.

Senior goalkeeper Higgins had 12 saves in the loss, and was instrumental in keeping the Brewers in contention throughout the second half. Western Connecticut goalkeeper Avery had six saves in the win for the Colonials.
