POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 6, 2012) -- The Vassar College baseball team split its final doubleheader of the season with a dominant 8-1 win in game one and a 13-12 loss in game two against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Sunday at Prentiss Baseball Field.

In game one, John MacGregor celebrated Senior Day with a complete-game victory to lead Vassar to an 8-1 win. In game two, RPI profited from an early grand slam and a three-run homer and held off several Vassar rallies en route to a 13-12 win.

The Brewers finish the season with a 12-24 record and a 10-16 Liberty League record. The Engineers (22-18, 19-9) clinched a berth to the Liberty League Playoffs.

In game one, the Brewers wasted no time providing run support for MacGregor with a three-run inning in the bottom of the first. Mike Perrone stroked a double to left center to drive in Liam Lee from first base for a 1-0 lead. Brett Zaziski followed with a double to the warning track to bring Perrone home for a 2-0 lead. Zaziski eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches for the third run.

In the bottom of the second, the Brewers chased starter Jared Jensen from the game with a walk and then loaded the bases. Lee wore a pitch to bring in the first run of the inning for a 4-0 lead. Vassar went up 6-0 with a sacrifice fly by Mike Perrone and a groundout.

The Brewers extended the lead to 8-1 with a pair of RBI-doubles by Zaziski and Jason Garfinkel in the bottom of the sixth. MacGregor (4-1) coaxed a lineout double play to end the game, finishing with one run allowed on seven hits and six strikeouts. Jensen (3-1) earned his first loss of the season for RPI with four runs and two hits in one inning. For Vassar, Perrone and Zaziski had identical stat lines as each went 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, and two doubles.

Game two was a slugfest that featured a combined 25 runs on 27 hits. In a dramatic bottom of the ninth, Vassar trailed 13-11 with one out and runners on first and third. A chopper to short looked like it would end the game but RPI's shortstop took the ball of the heel of his glove to allow a run and keep Vassar's comeback hopes alive at 13-12. With runners on first and second, Lee hit a floating liner to left but the charging leftfielder made the catch and threw to second base for the double play to abruptly end Vassar's rally and season.

Although Vassar scored four runs in the first inning of game two, RPI countered with a six-run second inning. RPI scored a pair of runs on a walk and a hit batter before Tanner Boucher jacked a grand slam for a 7-4 RPI lead. In the following inning, Art Levenson smacked a three-run homer to push the lead to 10-4.

In the bottom of the third, Sean Morash slugged a  three-run homer to cut the RPI lead to 10-7. With the bases loaded and Vassar trailing 12-9 in the bottom of the seventh, Perrone knocked a two-out, two-RBI single to center to pull within one run of the lead at 12-11. RPI added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Andrew Kalish led off with a double and scored on double-play groundout.

Tim Gallagher earned the win in relief for RPI with one run on three hits in 2.2 innings of work. Senior Zachary Prudoff is tagged the loss for Vassar, allowing seven runs on two hits in his first career start.

Morash led the Brewers at the dish in game two, going 4-for-5 with four RBIs, three runs, one homer, and one double.

For RPI, Levenson went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs, one double, and one home run.
