Baseball Drops Road Doubleheader Against Union, 6-1 and 9-5

SCHENECTADY, NY (April 14, 2012) -- The Vassar College baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep on the road against Union College in Liberty League action, losing 6-1 and 9-5 on Saturday.

The Dutchmen mustered a pair of seven-inning outings as starter Dane O'Neil led Union to a 6-1 win in game one with one run allowed on five hits and Phil Kemp earned the win in game two with two runs allowed on seven hits.

Vassar drops to 8-15, 6-8 on the season, while Union improves to 12-11, 7-7. The series continues with a doubleheader hosted by Vassar on Sunday at 1:00 pm at Prentiss Baseball Field.

In game two, Matt Barretto crushed a grand slam to put the Dutchmen up 6-0 in the second inning. Barretto batted 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs in game two.

Trailing 9-2 heading into the ninth, Vassar began a two-out rally, loading the bases with an error, hit batter, and a walk. Sean Morash drove in three runs with a double to center to cut Union's lead to 9-5. Union changed pitchers and coaxed a fly ball to end the rally and draw the game to a close.

In game one, Vassar scored its run in the first inning with an RBI groundout by Brett Zaziski. Union scored two runs in the bottom of the frame and spread five runs over the next five innings for a 6-1 win.

Vassar's Scott Allen was tagged the loss in game one with six runs allowed on 11 hits. Lawrence Flicker earned the loss in game two with seven runs allowed on eight hits in 1.1 innings.

For Vassar, Mike Perrone hit 4-for-8 with one run on the day.
