POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 31, 2012) -- The Vassar College baseball team split a doubleheader with first-place Skidmore College, stealing game one 4-3 in the ninth inning with a walk-off single by
A.J. Kim on Saturday at Prentiss Baseball Field.
In the bottom of the seventh inning,
Sean Morash tied the game with a two-out flare down the right field line to send the game to extra innings and
Zander Mrlik threw two scoreless innings to earn the win. Isaac Forman dealt a scoreless seven-inning complete game to lead the Thoroughbreds to a 2-0 win in game two.
The Brewers (4-9, 2-9 Liberty) and Thoroughbreds (11-3, 5-1 Liberty) wrap up the series with a doubleheader Sunday, April 1, at 12:00 pm at Skidmore.
In game one, Skidmore led 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth and the usually-reliable Andrew Bannon relieved Zack Rudman in a save situation. Freshman
Dan McCormack led off the inning with a single up the middle but Bannon induced a flyout and a popout on the next batters for two outs. Kim walked to put runners on first and second with two outs and Morash delivered the auspicious bloop single three feet from the line to bring in McCormack and tie the game 3-3.
In the bottom of the ninth, McCormack led off the inning with a walk and
Dave Robbins bunted him to second. Costanzo was intentionally walked to put runners on first and second and Kim slapped a single to left to drive in McCormack for the 4-3 win.
In the second game, both starters, Forman and
Lawrence Flicker, went seven complete innings with runs and hits at a premium. Although Flicker allowed only five hits, Skidmore played small ball to score a run in the third and sixth.
In the third, Geoff Green singled up the middle to bring in Jeremy Selecky from third. In the sixth, Rudman drove in Leejay Pollachi from third with a hit through the left side.
Selecky was 2-for-3 with a run and a double. For Vassar,
Scott Allen went 2-for-3.
