Back And Forth Game, Men's Basketball Falls To Mt. St. Vincent In Overtime, 78-72

RIVERDALE, NY (December 4, 2012) – The Vassar College men's basketball team fell to the College of Mount St. Vincent 78-72 Tuesday night after a back and forth second half and overtime period.

Junior guard Sam Rappaport hit a 3-pointer with 27 seconds remaining in the second half to tie the game and send it into overtime.

The Brewers (3-3) will next host Hamilton College on Saturday, December 8 at 3:00 pm. The Dolphins (3-3) will next host Sarah Lawrence tomorrow night at 7:30 pm.

Mount St. Vincent led at the start of the second half 28-26 but could not get more than a six-point lead throughout the whole half. The Brewers and Dolphins exchanged quick runs that resulted in six lead changes and six instances where the score was tied.

Vassar's greatest lead of the night came when junior forward John Donnelly laid the ball in with over five minutes remaining in the second half to give the Brewers a 53-51 lead. Vassar and Mount St. Vincent went on a 4-4 run after Vassar took the lead to keep the Brewers ahead 57-55 before Dolphin Sean Caputo sunk a 3-pointer under two minutes left to take the lead by one.

The Dolphins built their lead to five. Sophomore forward Alex Snyder hit a pair of free throws to bring their lead down to three before Rappaport's game-tying three.

Senior guard Jon Herzog hit a layup just 17 seconds into overtime giving Vassar their only lead of overtime 64-62.

Mount St. Vincent's James Zuccaro tied the game with a solo layup and then took the lead with another layup and a pair of free throws. The Brewers came within two points of tying the game off a pair of Herzog free throws. The Dolphins went on a 10-6 run to close out the game.

Despite only two lead changes in the first half, the Brewer offense shot 47 percent from the floor and the defense kept the Dolphins' lead to no more than seven points.

Vassar scored 26 points in the paint during the second half. Out of those points, six of them were from fast breaks while Mount St. Vincent managed no fast break points in the second half or overtime.

Donnelly had the game-high point score with 23. He added nine rebounds and two assists as well. Snyder continued his dominance under the basket, pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds but couldn't find many scoring opportunities as he went 2-3 from the floor. Rappaport added 14 points from the bench.

Mount St. Vincent's season leading scorer, Zuccaro (averaged 18.6 points per game coming in) hit for 18 points as well as Shaquille Cunningham. Zuccaro had the team-high seven rebounds.

Vassar outshot Mount St. Vincent 27-25 from the floor and 6-4 from outside of the arc. Mount St. Vincent 24 out of their 36 free throws while Vassar hit 12 of the 21.
