ROCHESTER, NY (January 21, 2012) – After a couple of sluggish offensive games, the Vassar College women's basketball team broke out with a vengeance in its Liberty League contest against Rochester Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. The Brewers placed four players in double figures and shot 49 percent from the floor in defeating the Tigers 73-51 at Clark Gym.

The first half provided all the impetus Vassar needed to snap its two-game losing streak. The Brewers led from start-to-finish and behind 57 percent shooting from the field and 13 first half points from sophomore guard Cydni Matsuoka, Vassar raced out to a 21-9 lead at the 9:44 minute mark following a made jumper from freshman guard Nyah Berg off a Matsuoka assist. A Matsuoka 3-pointer with 6:56 until halftime pushed the Vassar lead to 28-12, increasing a double digit lead the Brewers held the rest of the game.

Vassar and improves the Brewers to 9-5, 3-2 in Liberty League play. Vassar continues Liberty League play with a road game against RPI on Tuesday, January 24 at 6:00 p.m. RIT drops to 7-9, 3-4 and travels to Union on January 24 for a 6:00 p.m. game

“We had a tough loss last night and it was great to come back and rebound today,” said head coach Candice Brown. “We limited our mistakes, hit shots and didn't give up second chance opportunities which was huge. Overall we played a complete game and it was good to get this win going into RPI on Tuesday.”

Vassar pushed on the accelerator harder in the second half. When senior guard Brittany Parks converted on an old fashioned 3-point play just six minutes into the half, Vassar led by 20 points at 49-29. A 3-pointer from senior forward Kristyn Tempora with nine minutes remaining provided the Brewers with an insurmountable 61-36 lead and Vassar cruised home, getting offensive production from all but three roster players.

Vassar was dominant off the glass, holding a 49-20 rebounding margin and used that edge for a 12-4 advantage in second chance points. Despite the 29 swing in rebounds, RIT outscored Vassar 34-26 in the paint.

The guard tandem of Matsuoka and Parks was back in sync, netting 18 and 17 points respectively. Freshman forward Colleen O'Connell powered her way into a 13-point, 10-rebound afternoon and Tempora had an efficient 10 points with 9 rebounds.

RIT got 15 points from sophomore guard Kayla Wheeler and 11 from junior guard Leslie Havens
