DANBURY, CT (September 7, 2011) -- The Vassar College women's soccer team played 95 minutes of scoreless soccer but Western Connecticut broke the silence with a goal on the only shot of the overtime period Wednesday evening at the WestConn Athletic Complex.
On the game's final play, WestConn freshman Ashley Hutkowski accelerated past a Vassar defender and lofted the ball toward the center of the box. The ball hit the turf and bounced high enough for Jillian Duran to head the ball just over the outstretched hands of Vassar's keeper,
Ali Higgins, who was racing out of the goal to intercept the pass. The slow-rolling ball crossed the line just ahead of a Vassar defender for the golden goal.
The Brewers (2-2) have a week-long layover before hosting Stevens Institute of Technology in their home-opener on Wednesday, September 14, at 4:30 p.m. The Colonials (2-0) play Christopher Newport on the road this Saturday, September 10 at 3:00 p.m.
The first half of play featured few scoring opportunities for either team, as the defense on both sides of the field controlled play. The best scoring chance for Vassar came in the final minute of the first half when WestConn keeper Caitlin Avery had to make a diving save on a shot by Vassar's
Gavriella Kaplan after Kaplan raced past the Colonial defenders on a breakaway.
The second half again featured strong defensive play, but also periods of heavy rain, both of which limited the scoring chances for either team. WestConn nearly broke the tie early in the second half when Lindsey LeConche headed a corner kick taken by freshman Emily Burke that bounced hard off the right post and out of play.
Caitlin Avery made six saves for the Colonials in goal to earn the win. Higgins tallied seven saves for Vassar.
