Baseball Splits With Union, Playoff Hopes Dashed

SCHENECTADY, NY (May 7, 2011) -- Although the Vassar College baseball team won game one in dominating fashion 10-0, Union College withstood a late rally for an 8-7 win to split the Saturday doubleheader and end Vassar's playoff hopes.

The Brewers (14-18, 7-12) have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention but finish the season on Sunday, May 8, with a home doubleheader and Senior Day against Union at noon at Prentiss Baseball Field.

In game one, Vassar starter Scott Allen pitched a five-hit complete game shutout to earn the win. Vassar did its damage in the fifth inning with a seven-run rally on six hits and two errors. After scraping together four runs, Joe Castilla cracked a three-run homer to put Vassar up 9-0.

Dane O'Neil is tabbed the loss for Union with eight runs on seven hits and eight strikeouts.

Castilla went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run.

In the second game, the Brewers fell behind early as the Dutchmen tagged Vassar starter Joe Lovizio for six runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings.

Trailing 8-2 heading into the top of the eighth, Vassar rallied for five runs on four hits to pull within one run at 8-7. The Brewers scored on a single by Joe Bubar, a sac fly by Sal Costanzo, a wild pitch to score Castilla, and a two-RBI double by Brett Zaziski.

Vassar ended up a run shy as Andrew Beaule closed out the ninth with a one-out save with the tying run on second base for an 8-7 Dutchmen win. Phil Kemp lasted seven innings with two runs on eight hits to earn the win for Union.

Costanzo (2-for-4) and Zaziski (2-for-5) each tallied two hits and two RBI.
