POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 3, 2011) -- Behind seven strong innings from starter
John MacGregor and a pair of two-out RBI hits by freshman
Brett Zaziski, the Vassar College baseball team defeated Mount Saint Mary College 5-2 on Tuesday at Prentiss Baseball Field to sweep the season series.
MacGregor allowed six hits and one run with four strikeouts to improve to 3-0 in the season. Mount Saint Mary starter Matt Paci (3-3) is credited the loss for two runs on three hits in three innings. Although the Knights out-hit the Brewers 8-6, Vassar showed patience at the plate with a total of six walked or hit batters, three of which scored.
The Brewers (13-17, 6-11) play their final Liberty League series this weekend against Union with a road doubleheader on Saturday, May 7, at 2:00 p.m., and a home doubleheader and Senior Day on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Knights end the season with a 17-16 record.
The Brewers went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first as junior
Sal Costanzo drew a two-out walk and scored from first on an opposite-field double to left center by Zaziski.
Mount Saint Mary responded in the next inning as Billy Casey creamed a first-pitch double over the leftfielder's head to drive in Paul Cherubino and even the score 1-1.
Vassar regained the lead in the bottom of the frame as senior
David Ringold led off with a double to right center and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate
Devon Luongo.
Zaziski came through once more with two outs as he singled up the middle to bring in
Mike Perrone from third. The Brewers plated two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Zaziski led the Brewers at the dish with a 2-for-4, two-RBI outing. With four games remaining, his .512 on-base percentage is on pace to break the single-season program record of .488 set by Kristaps Aldins in 2005.
Casey (2-for-4) and Cherubino (2-for-3) each had two hits for the Knights.
