POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 3, 2011) -- In its final home event of the season, the Vassar College women's tennis team made use of both tennis venues with an 8-0 win over Bates College indoors at Walker Field House and a 9-0 loss to ITA No. 2 ranked Amherst at Josselyn Tennis Courts. The Brewers honored seniors Caroline Dunn-Rankin and Alyssa Roush.

“It was a great day of tennis on our home courts, playing two matches in one day,” said head coach Kathy Campbell. “It was a good test for us at this point in our season. For our seniors, Caroline and Alyssa, it was their last home match as the team is on the road the rest of the season.”

The Brewers (10-3) look to defend last season's Seven Sisters Championship this Saturday and Sunday, April 9-10, at Wellesley College.

Against Bates, Vassar took a 3-0 lead with a sweep of doubles. Roush and junior Jennifer Beckerman edged Nicole Russell/Ashley Brunk 8-5 at No. 2 doubles. “The Vassar team played clean tennis, setting up points well and hitting crisp finishing shots,” said Campbell. “In doubles we were taking the ball early and moving forward to gain offensive court position early in the point.”

The momentum continued into the singles where the Vassar swept all the matches decisively in two sets.

Against Amherst, Vassar was unable to earn a point but the Brewers played several competitive matches. At No. 1 doubles, juniors Joy Backer and Nicole Block competed particularly well against the No. 1 team in the Northeast, pushing Laura Danzig and Natasha Brown to 8-4 in the loss. “They've been playing more aggressively which is something we've been working on in practice,” said Campbell.

At No. 4 singles, Jennifer Ruther posted the closest singles score in a 7-5, 6-2 loss to Laken King. “Jenny used a lot variety in her shots to keep Laken off balance,” said Campbell. “But in the end, Laken started attacking the net more to close out points.”

“I'm proud of the way the team fought and set up their points. Especially in the singles, the points were long and and forced Amherst to put more balls to earn the point,” said Campbell.
