POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 27, 2011) – A determined Vassar College men's lacrosse team, bent on ending its home and Liberty League season with a victory, found Union College a resistant opponent, and on the difficult end of a 15-4 loss Wednesday evening at Weinberg Field.
The Brewers had few answers for a powerful and deep Dutchman attack that jumped out to a commanding 7-1 lead, led in shots 43-22 and had 10 different players figure into the scoring column. In a deficit the entire contest, Vassar was able to draw within 10-4 with 6:20 to play in the third period off a pretty assist from senior midfielder
Sam Seymour to junior attack
Christopher Toffoli in the middle of the crease, but Union scored the game's next five goals for a convincing victory.
Vassar drops to 5-8, 1-5 and will conclude the 2011 season on Friday night on the road against Morrisville State. Union improves to 10-3, 4-1, and hosts Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Union is currently tied with Skidmore atop the Liberty League standings.
The Brewers, who trailed 8-2 at halftime, got a three goal performance from Toffoli and one from freshman attack
Max Herman. Herman's goal tied the contest 1-1 just a minute into the contest, but it was a short-lived stalemate as Union went on a six goal run, getting three goals from junior attack Ted McKenna, for a 7-1 lead.
After intermission, Toffoli tallied his second goal with 13:27 to play, bringing Vassar within 9-3, but six of the game's next seven goals came off Union sticks, each goal from a different Dutchman player. The deep and versatile Dutchmen held a 12-4 lead entering the fourth period and simply wore down the Brewers in the final stanza. Vassar was held to only two shots on goal as the game played out in Union's favor.
Union freshman attack Rob Santangelo and fellow attack classmate Nate Greenberg each had two goals.
