Baseball Quells SUNY Purchase Rally In Ninth For 4-2 Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 25, 2011) -- The Vassar College baseball team came through with timely pitching to win a low-scoring hit fest 4-2 over SUNY Purchase on Monday afternoon.

Junior Zachary Prudoff survived a two-out bases-loaded jam in the top of the ninth to earn the six-out save to seal the win. Vassar starter John MacGregor pitched an efficient six innings to earn the win, allowing one run on a scattered eight hits. Eric Cuadrado lasted five innings and allowed all four of Vassar's runs for the loss.

The Brewers (12-16, 6-11) next play Farleigh Dickinson University- Madison on Sunday, May 1, at 1:00 p.m. The Panthers (16-14, 8-8) next play in the first round of the Skyline Conference Championships on Wednesday, April 27.

The Brewers scored three runs in the first two innings to take an early lead that went unchallenged until the eighth and ninth innings. Vassar loaded the bases with no outs in the first and scored speedsters Liam Lee and Mike Perrone on a double play ball that ended in overthrow of the first baseman. Perrone drove in Joe Castilla on a sharply hit single to left center in the second inning for a 3-0 lead.

With Vassar up 4-1 with one out in the top of the ninth, Purchase scored as John Duffy found a hole in the right side to bring in Dominick Simone from second. Following a popup for the second out, Mark Donahue stroked a liner to center and Leo Francisco beat out an infield single to load the bases. Michael Marrone hit a slow dribbler toward first base but Prudoff scooped up the ball and tagged the bag to beat the diving Marrone for the final out.

Vassar scored four runs on 14 hits with nine left on base, while Purchase scored two runs on 13 hits with 13 left on.

For Vassar, Perrone went 3-for-4 with two runs, one RBI, and three stolen bases. Donahue went 3-for-5 for Purchase.
