POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 23, 2011) – The St. Lawrence women's lacrosse team used an 8-0 scoring run to erase a 7-2 first half deficit and capitalized on scoring from eight different players to defeat Vassar College 16-13 in Liberty League play on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.

The Saints, who found themselves down 7-2 against a Vassar team playing on emotion and adrenaline after honoring its five graduating seniors prior to the contest, scored eight straight goals to close out the first half and begin the second half. Despite getting four second half goals from senior midfielder Sarah Warner, the Brewers could get no closer than 10-8, which came in the opening minutes of the second half, and then 16-13, with just 1:58 to play. After building a 15-9 lead off a goal by junior attack Alanna Piroli – her third of the game – the Saints were able to answer every Vassar scoring threat in the final 14 minutes of the game.

The loss drops Vassar to 6-7, 1-5. The Brewers will return to Liberty League action next Friday, April 29, with a road contest against Rochester at 4:00 pm. The Saints improve to 6-9, 4-4 and will next face St. John Fisher on May 1.

After St. Lawrence junior midfielder Kendall Harty scored the game's first goal just 45 seconds into play, the Brewers tallied three straight goals from senior attack Moe Byrne and back-to-back goals from senior midfielder Allie Morgan. Consecutive unassisted goals from Warner, who had six in the contest, pushed the Brewers ahead 7-2 with 15:21 until intermission.

The Saints effectively used weaving shots through traffic, low and hard against Vassar senior goalie Nicole Engelhardt to tie the contest 7-7 following a free position goal by sophomore midfielder Stephanie O'Rourke with 6:46 to play. St. Lawrence then went into halftime leading 9-7 after goals from sophomore attack Brigid Hurley and sophomore midfielder Johanna Kelley. In that seven goal first half ending run, St. Lawrence got goals from five different players and two from Hurley.

The Saints kept the pressure on the Vassar defense in a second half that saw St. Lawrence outshoot the Brewers 16-11. A goal by junior attack Alanna Piroli pushed St. Lawrence ahead 15-9 with 14:08 to play. Vassar answered with three straight goals, two from Warner and one from junior midfielder Elizabeth Feltch to close within 15-12 with 11:48 to play. St. Lawrence ran a patient offense and got a goal with 5:05 to play from senior midfielder for a 16-12 lead. The visitors then secured ball possession off the draw control (the Saints held a 20-11 advantage) and were able to knock off almost three minutes of clock time before Vassar junior attack Maura McCarthy brought the Brewers within 16-13 with 1:58 to play. The Brewers were unable to muster any further offense in the closing minutes.

Feltch and Morgan each had two goals for the Brewers. Junior midfielder Margie Bailey had three goals for a St. Lawrence team that saw four players score two goals.

Vassar's goalie tandem of Engelhardt and junior backup Heather Kesselman, who subbed at the 22:10 mark of the second half, made four and two saves respectively. St. Lawrence senior goalie Anna Marchand made three saves in a complete game win.
