POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 20, 2011) -- The Vassar College baseball team had a strong offensive showing with eight runs and fifteen hits but could not match a formidable Stevens Institute of Technology offense that erupted for 15 runs on 20 hits with two home runs on Wednesday.
Although Stevens maintained the lead for the game's duration, Vassar kept pace with the potent Duck offense while using six pitchers. Sophomore
Lawrence Flicker made the start and lasted 1.2 innings for Vassar to earn the loss. Tyler Courter allowed seven runs on nine hits to earn the win for the Ducks.
The Brewers (10-15, 5-10) host University of Rochester in back to back Liberty League doubleheaders this Friday, April 22, at 2:00 p.m. and Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at Prentiss Baseball Field. The Ducks (7-17, 3-5) play SUNY Old Westbury at home this Friday at 12:00 p.m.
Stevens erupted in the top of the second inning with a big rally that plated six runs on four hits and two errors for a 7-0 lead. Kenneth Meerendonk pulled a towering homerun down the left field line for two RBI.
Vassar retaliated with five runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits as it batted through the order. Freshman
Brett Zaziski opened the inning with a screamer to center. The Brewers loaded the bases and then scored on a fielder's choice by
Sean Morash, singles by
Joe Bubar and
Mike Perrone, and a two-RBI single by
Liam Lee.
In the bottom of the fifth, senior
Joe Bubar cracked a two-RBI double to the right center gap to bring the Brewers within three at 10-7.
Stevens pulled away with a four-run seventh on six hits with a pair of two-RBI doubles by Denis Ackerman and Ryan Kiczek.
Trailing 14-7, the Brewers threatened a comeback with a one-run bottom of the eight but a double play with the bases loaded ended the inning and halted their momentum.
Bubar led the Brewers at the dish, going 3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, two doubles, and a walk. Lee went 2-for-6 with three RBI.
For Stevens, Meerendonk went 3-for-6 with three RBI, two runs, one home run, and a double. Michael Donovan had a solo homer and went 2-for-6 at the plate.
