POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 2, 2011) – With a decisive swing of the bat, junior left fielder
Sal Costanzo redeemed himself of a costly fielding error as the Vassar College baseball team scored a 4-3 walkoff win in the first game of a doubleheader against defending Liberty League champions Skidmore College Saturday afternoon at Prentiss field. A few hours later, Vassar celebrated again as a two-out, two-run walkoff single by freshman second baseman
Dave Robbins with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 11th capped a wild back and forth contest. This was Vassar's first doubleheader sweep of Skidmore in over five years.
With the victories, the Brewers improve to 7-6 on the season (3-3 in League play), while the Thoroughbreds fall to 9-4 (1-3 within the Liberty League). The teams will meet for another doubleheader on Sunday, April 3 at Skidmore, with the first game scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
With two outs and a 3-2 Vassar lead in top of the 7th (and final) inning of the opening contest, Costanzo dropped a fly ball to left by senior pitcher Zack Rudman, allowing the Thoroughbreds to tie the game. Costanzo didn't dwell on his error long, however, coming up to the plate in the bottom of the frame with two outs and Robbins standing just 90 feet away. Costanzo hit a sharp ground ball up the right side of the infield to bring the runner home and seal the Vassar win.
Vassar also reaped the offensive benefit of a towering triple in the bottom of the 3rd by senior third baseman
Joe Castilla, breaking a one-run tie. Senior left fielder
Devon Luongo had the Brewers' other RBI, scoring the runner by grounding into a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first.
For the Brewers, junior starter
Scott Allen winds up with a no decision following 6.2 solid innings of work, allowing three earned runs on five hits. Allen benefited from some impressive fielding by senior first baseman
Joe Bubar, who made several impressive digs and turned a beautiful unassisted double play in the top of the 2nd. Junior
Zachary Prudoff gets the win, his first decision on the season, after getting the final out of the 7th. For the Thoroughbreds, Rudman ends up with the loss in a complete game effort, allowing all 4 of Vassar's runs—three earned—on 4 hits. His overall record now drops to 1-1.
In the second game, the Brewers found themselves in a 4-3 hole entering the home frame of the 11th inning, when, down to their final out, Robbins ripped a single hard up the left side of the infield to score Luongo and Castilla and complete the sweep of the doubleheader. The Thoroughbreds had also taken an extra innings lead in the top of the 10th, but an infield single by sophomore short stop
Mike Perrone kept the Brewers alive, setting the stage for Robbins' heroics.
Castilla, Luongo and junior centerfielder
Liam Lee also drove in runs for the Brewers. Prudoff, who came in of relief of freshman starter
Joe Lovizio in the 8th inning, earned his second win off the day, improving to 2-0. Lovizio lasted 7.2 solid innings, in which he let in three runs— two earned— on eight hits. For the Thoroughbreds, sophomore Bobby Stafutti, who entered in the 10th inning, gets the loss, falling to 2-1 on the season.
