POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 14, 2011) -- The Vassar College baseball team struggled against the live bats and arms of cross-river rival SUNY New Paltz in a 10-1 loss Wednesday afternoon at Prentiss Baseball Field.
The Hawks scored 10 runs on 16 hits and held the resurgent Brewers to one run on four hits. New Paltz's John Schmidt (2-1) allowed one run on four hits in six innings to earn the win. Vassar sophomore
Max Frankel (1-1) surrendered four runs on eight hits in four innings and is credited with the loss.
The Brewers (10-11) travel to St. Lawrence for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday, April 16, at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday at 12:00 p.m. The Hawks (12-12) host SUNY Oswego in a doubleheader this Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
The bulk of New Paltz's offensive output came in two innings. Mike Kaldon opened the second inning with a shot down the leftfield line for a double. He advanced to third on a single by Matt Prescia and scored on a fielder's choice by Mike Sherlock to break the 1-1 tie. The Hawks added two more runs on a fielder's choice and an a single in the hole for a four run lead.
The Hawks added four more runs in the sixth with two runs coming on a crushing, two-RBI double to left center by Jake Cameron.
New Paltz protected the three-run lead with three hitless innings from the fifth to the seventh. Vassar managed to load the bases with two outs in the sixth on two walks and a hit batter, but senior
Joe Bubar grounded out to first base to end the inning.

Brett Zaziski went 2-for-2 at the dish with two walks and Vassar's lone RBI on a stinging double to the opposite field. Junior
Scott Allen stepped off the mound to make his first start in the field and flashed a solid bat with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Thomas Pinnola powered the New Paltz offense with a 4-for-5, three-RBI, two run outing that included a triple. Prescia went 3-for-3 with one run.
