POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 26, 2011) -- In the first match in the last eight years in which Skidmore College has held a higher national ranking, the No. 29 Vassar College women's tennis team knocked off of its rival, No. 19 Skidmore, 7-2 on Saturday at Walker Field House.
The Brewers (9-2) next host Bates at 8:30 a.m. and Amherst at 4:15 p.m. on Sunday, April 3. The Thoroughbreds (8-3) face TCNJ at Wellesley on Saturday, April 2, at 2:00 p.m.
Skidmore picked up the first point of the day, taking the No. 1 doubles match with Vassar evening the team score at 1-1 by capturing the No. 3 doubles match.
The No. 2 match went extremely long as Skidmore's Melissa Hirsch and Molly Nolan took a commanding 5-0, 6-1 and 7-2 lead. The Vassar pair of
Jennifer Beckerman and
Alyssa Roush kept fighting and stayed in the match. Down 7-2, Vassar stormed back by winning the next five games to even the match score at 7-7. En route, Vassar fought off a match point at 6-7 (40-30) when Beckerman crushed a backhand return winner to even the game score at deuce. Vassar then clinched that game for a 7-7 tie. Each team held serve in the final two games, forcing the match to a tiebreak at 8-8. From 2-2 in the tiebreak, it was a see-saw affair with the score not more than a one-point differential throughout the breaker. Vassar clinched match point with volley by Roush. That doubles match lasted about 1 hour and 45 minutes.
Using the momentum from the comeback victory at No. 2 doubles, Vassar swept five of the six singles matches---all in two sets.
"All of Vassar's singles players executed aggressive game plans and played with great confidence and composure," said head coach
Kathy Campbell. "I'm so proud of the way our team played and fought today. It was a decisive and great victory. Our players deserve tons of credit for their hard work, fighting spirit, execution and composure."
