POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 26, 2011) – The Vassar College baseball team dropped the first game of its home and Liberty League opening doubleheader with Clarkson University 3-2 and sits tied at 10-10 in the top of the 10th inning after the second game was called on account of darkness at Prentiss Baseball Field on Saturday. Clarkson rallied for five runs in the top of the ninth to tie the game before shutting down the Brewers in the bottom of the frame.

The Brewers fall to 4-3 pending the result the second game of the doubleheader, and the Golden Eagles improve to 5-4. The suspended game resumes on Sunday, March 27, at Prentiss Baseball Field, at 12:00 p.m. followed immediately by the second double header of the four-game series.

Down by a single run in the bottom of the 7th (and final) inning of the opening game, sophomore right fielder Sean Morash hit a line drive single into left center to give the Brewers some late life. Advancing to second on a wild pitch, and then to third on a flyout by senior first baseman Joe Bubar, the Brewer's hopes for a rally faltered when Clarkson senior pitcher David Goerold managed to strike out freshman second baseman Dave Robbins to end it.

Goerold was sharp all afternoon, battling sophomore southpaw Lawrence Flicker for the complete game victory. Goerold let in only two runs—both earned—on three Vassar hits in the effort, which sees him improve to 2-1. Flicker, who put up a strong complete game effort of his own in which he let in three runs—only one of which was earned—on six Clarkson hits. Flicker drops to 1-2 with the loss.

Although Vassar managed to strike first when Bubar scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 3rd, Clarkson tied the game at the top of the next frame with an RBI single by senior catcher Sam Grainger. Vassar briefly regained the lead in the bottom of the inning when a sacrifice fly by senior third baseman Joe Castilla scored junior catcher Sal Costanzo. A three-base fielding error by Morash to start the fifth allowed Clarkson to tie the game on an RBI single up the gut by junior shortstop Jerry Coleman and take the lead for good with an RBI by sophomore first baseman Pete Lasecki.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Vassar bats came alive early, as the Brewers erupted for six runs in the 2nd inning. With senior right fielder Devon Luongo on base, Golden Knights senior starter Alex Giovannone walked three consecutive batters to force Luongo home to start the scoring. Robbins then dropped a fast-falling single into right field to drive in the second run, and sophomore shortstop Mike Perrone followed Robbins by beating out a throw at first for an RBI infield single to keep the scoring going. With two outs in the inning, Costanzo singled hard into left to bring in a pair of runs, and Perrone managed to score Vassar's sixth run of the inning on the play following a throwing error by senior right fielder Garrett Russell.

Despite trailing at one point by a score of 8-1, the Golden Knights persisted and managed to score a total of nine runs over the final three innings to even the score heading into the bottom of ninth. With Vassar up 10-8 with 2 outs in the top of the ninth, Robbins moved from second to the mound to try and notch the save. The ball was not moving how he would have liked, however, and after hitting the first batter he faced he walked sophomore center fielder Scott Morrissey to force in a run. Robbins hit his second Golden Knight—junior third baseman David Kinney—at the end of a long at bat to tie the game before finally getting Coleman to fly out to end the frame.

Vassar junior starter John MacGregor was chased after seven solid innings of work in which he let in five earned runs on six hits. MacGregor, who left the game with a 10-5 lead, winds up with a no decision on the contest. Giovannone pitched 5.2 innings before being relieved, during which he allowed 8 runs by the Brewers—seven earned—on five hits.
