Lee's Overtime Goal Lifts Men's Lacrosse Past Utica, 5-4

UTICA, NY (March 19, 2011) – Junior midfielder Jeff Lee scored the game-winning goal with 2:00 left in overtime, to lead the Vassar College men's lacrosse team to 5-4 victory over Utica College on Saturday afternoon.

Lee's unassisted goal, his second of the game and third of the season, came after Utica junior midfielder Oliver Barney had tied the contest 4-4 with 2:47 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The Brewers improve to 2-2 on the season and will begin Liberty League play on March 23 with a 7:00 p.m. game against Renesslear Polytechnic Institute. Utica drops to 1-3 and faces Hamilton College on March 23 at 4:00 p.m.

Behind goals from Lee and freshman attack Max Herman, the Brewers broke out to a 2-0 after the first quarter. The Pioneers scored the game's next two goals from junior midfielder Zachary Menapeace and sophomore midfielder Ben Winkler to send the game into intermission tied 2-2.

After a scoreless third quarter, Vassar stormed ahead with back-to-back goals from sophomore attack Christopher Toffoli at the 12 and 5 minute mark of the fourth quarter to take a 4-2 lead. Utica answered with two goals scored slightly more than a minute apart – starting at the 3:41 mark by freshman attack TJ Benson and junior midfielder Oliver Barney at 2:47 – to tie the contest with 2:47 remaining.

For the Brewers, senior Alex Tice started the contest and made five saves. Freshman Andrew Nicol played the entire second half and overtime, earning the win after a nine save performance. 

Utica, junior goalie Wilson Mukrdechian made eight saves in the contest.
