AUBURNDALE, FL (March 12, 2011) -- Boosted by a dominating pitching performance from sophomore starter Lawrence Flicker, the Vassar College men's baseball team won its first game of the 2011 season 3-2 Saturday afternoon over Beloit College at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Florida.

Beloit drops to 4-3 on the young season, while Vassar is 1-0 for the first time since 2008. The Brewers will take on Sewanee University at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon in its second of six games at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational tournament.

The left-handed Flicker scattered seven hits over six and one third innings, and allowed two earned runs while striking out six and walking two.

Beloit tied the game 1-1 on a bases-loaded walk by Jon Siil with two outs in the bottom of the fourth inning, but Flicker got Mike Kovach to pop out to second to end Beloit's biggest scoring threat of the game.

The Brewers responded to the first Beloit pitching change of the day by taking a two-run lead in the sixth inning. Senior Devin Luongo hit an RBI double to left-center off of Grant Hendrickson, and freshman Brett Zazinski followed with an RBI single to make it 3-1.

Flicker kept the Beloit batters off-balance and lasted into the seventh inning before a walk, a wild pitch and a ground-out landed a runner on third with one out. Sophomore Zander Mrlik was first out of the bullpen for Vassar, and gave up a sacrifice fly to right by Jordan Jaenicke before getting the third out of the inning. Mrlik pitched the eighth as well and gave up one hit, but struck out Jake Majeski with two outs and a runner on second to keep Vassar in front 3-2.

Freshman Dave Robbins, who started at second base and went 2-for-4, pitched the ninth for the first save of his career. Robbins struck out two and gave up one hit.

Vassar scored its first run of the game in the first inning on a sac fly by Luongo, who finished 1-for-3 with two RBI. Beloit starter Andrew Edwards pitched five full innings and gave up one earned run on two hits and four walks. Grant Hendrickson got the loss in four innings of relief, giving up six hits and two earned runs.

Liam Lee notched two hits and one stolen base for the Brewers. Jaenicke, Mike Ross and Dan Edwards all had two hits for Beloit.
