POTSDAM, NY (February 5, 2011) -- Although The Vassar College men's basketball team mounted a come-back with five straight 3-pointers to open the second half, Clarkson University's halftime lead provided a sufficient buffer to withstand the run as the Golden Knights held on for a 67-50 victory Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gynasium.
Facing a 21-point halftime deficit, the Brewers emerged from the locker room on fire as they opened the second half by hitting six of nine shots to pull within 10 at 49-39 with 10:32 remaining. Junior forward
Ethan Shanley fueled the 19-10 run with 11 points from three triples and a layup. Shanley had a career night, posting three career-highs with 17 points, eight rebounds, and four assists.Vassar outscored Clarkson 32-28 in the second half.
The Brewers (3-17, 1-8) host Union this Friday, February 11, at 8:00 p.m. and celebrate Senior Day on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against Skidmore. The Golden Knights (11-9, 3-6) remain alive in the hunt for a Liberty League playoff spot and host St. Lawrence University at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday night.
While the Brewers cut into Clarkson's lead in the second half, they never came within single digits and the Knights were able to respond with key jumpers from Rey Jefferson and Shawn Lasalita down the stretch. Although Clarkson went cold from beyond the 3-point arc in the second half (1-for-10), Nate Uline and Jonathan Hood produced on the inside to contribute to a 7-2 advantage in second chance points in the half and a 13-4 edge for the game.
In the early going, Vassar held a modest one-point lead, but Clarkson went on 16-2 run over the course of seven minutes to take a 20-7 lead midway through the first half. That advantage pushed past 20 by halftime, as the Knights shot 16-for-35 (45.7%) from the field while holding Vassar to 7-for-25 shooting (28.0 percent).
Felix Llanos finished with 15 points to lead Clarkson, while Uline had a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Jefferson contributed 10 points, and Tyler Barron finished with seven assists.
