Hannah Senftleber fouling out in the final three minutes -- Union scored 16 of its final 20 points from the free throw line, capitalizing on an aggressive inside game that saw the Dutchwomen outrebound the Brewers 51-33, of which 18 rebounds came off the offensive glass. A 21-6 Union edge in second chance points proved critical, with 14 of them coming in the second half.
The loss drops Vassar to 11-10, 5-5 and into a two-way tie for fifth place in Liberty League standings with Rensselaer. The Brewers will next host Skidmore on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The game marks for the final home contest for graduating senior guard and co-captain
Carolyn Crampton. Union improves to 13-6, 8-3 and remains atop the Liberty League standings with St. Lawrence. The Dutchwomen next travel to RPI on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. contest.
Spurred by the offensive prowess of junior guard
Brittany Parks, who scored 28 of her game-high 33 points in the second half, the Brewers mounted a huge comeback after Union extended its 24-23 halftime lead to 42-31 within the first 5:30 of the second half. During those opening minutes of the second half, five different Union players contributed to the scoring, keyed by the play of senior forward Lauren McCormick, who had four of her 18 points in Union's 18-8 run out of the locker room. The Dutchwomen were buoyed by its deep bench, one that outscored Vassar 28-2.
Once Parks caught fire, the Brewers reversed the game's fortunes. She scored 16 of Vassar's next 23 points to push the Brewers ahead 54-49, but Union's senior forward Lauren Hennessey then took control of the game, scoring four of the Dutchwomen's next six points, which gave the visitors a 55-54 lead with 2:16 to play. Vassar was unable to get back a lead, while Union secured the game by connecting on 12 free throws over the final 1:47 of the game. Eight of those made free throws came off the calm release of junior guard Lindsay Hage.
With freshman guard
Cydni Matsuoka scoring 13 first half points, the Brewers jumped out to a 7-0 and then 10-2 lead to start the contest. Matsuoka made six of her first seven shots, but the Dutchwomen weathered that effort and went on a 16-7 run thanks to three straight 3-pointers, two coming from senior guard Leah Pepe to secure an 18-15 lead. Two free throws by Senftleber gave Vassar a 23-20 lead, but Union scored the final four points of the half for a 24-20 advantage.
Parks led all scorers with 33 points, her second 30-plus scoring game this season. Matsuoka finished with 16 points while Senftleber added seven points and a team-best seven rebounds.
Union was paced by McCormick's 18 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman guard Brittney Kenney had 13 points. Hennessey finished with 11 rebounds.
