POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (February 11, 2011) -- Although the Vassar College men's basketball team outscored Union 38-33 in the second half, the Dutchmen survived a cold second half to hang on for a 79-66 win Friday evening at the Athletics and Fitness Center.

Vassar opened the second half with an 8-3 run to pull within 12 points at 49-37. The Dutchmen lead hovered in the lower double-digits but the Brewers couldn't come any closer than nine points as they hit that margin four times. Union shot 25 percent from the field in the second half but compensated by hitting 23-of-27 free throws. The Brewers shot better from the field (.455) than from the charity stripe as they hit only 7-of-17 free throws (.412) in the second half.

The Brewers (3-20, 1-8) celebrate senior day tomorrow, February 12, at 4:00 p.m. against Skidmore. Union travels to RPI tomorrow for a 4:00 p.m. game.

Sophomore guard John Donnelly led Vassar with 18 points and twice brought the Brewers within nine points. With 7:46 left, he scored consecutive layups for a score of 59-50. A second time with 5:13 left, he converted with a spin move in the post to make it 65-56. Union countered Vassar's small runs with consistency at the free throw line.

The Dutchmen built their cushion in the first half as they exploded out of the gate with a19-2 run that spanned the first five minutes behind nine points by Evan Croll and eight by Keven Donohue. Vassar fought back to within nine points at 32-23 with a 7-0 run keyed by consecutive drives inside by Donnelly and a three-pointer by sophomore guard Jon Herzog. Union retaliated with a 14-5 run to close out the final five minutes of the half as Cal Shorey and Drew Goldstein split the points with seven apiece during that span. The balanced Dutchmen attack shot 58.6 percent from the floor as Donohue, Goldstein, and Shorey each finished with 11 points at the break to contribute to the 46-28 lead.

For Union, Donohue led all scorers and rebounders with a 22 point, 11 rebound double-double. Croll added 20 points and six rebounds. Goldstein chipped in with 18 points.

For Vassar, Donnelly posted an 18-point, 10 rebound double-double- his third of the season. Herzog tallied 13 points and a team high four assists. Junior forward Ethan Shanley struck 3-of-3 from beyond the arc and totaled 10 points.
