POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 25, 2011) – The Vassar College field hockey team led the University of Scranton on two occasions Tuesday night, but the visiting Royals scored the game's last two goals to snare a 3-2 victory over the Brewers in the home season finale at chilly Weinberg Field.

Although the Brewers jumped ahead 1-0 just 1:15 into the contest and again 2-1 in the opening three minutes of the second half, Scranton answered with back-to-back goals within a five minute span – at the 51st and 56th minute marks – for the comeback victory.

Vassar drops to 7-8, while Scranton improves to 10-5. The Brewers will conclude the 2011 season on Friday night with a 7:00 p.m. away game against Kean University. Scranton returns to action this Thursday hosting Keystone at 7:00 p.m.

The game-winning goal was orchestrated by Scranton junior forward Gretchen Kempt who skillfully eluded the Vassar defense on a breakaway from the midfield, and with strong stick work and speed slipped her shot past Vassar sophomore goalie Maggie Brelis for her 13th goal of the season.

The Brewers started with ablaze, getting a goal from freshman midfielder Dara Davis just 1:15 into the contest. Davis' fourth goal of the season was assisted by senior forward Emily Maier who used her own nifty stick work to set up a perfect feed to Davis across the middle for a quick 1-0 lead. Scranton answered two minutes later when senior midfielder Alicia Tamboia moved the ball across the arc and tallied an unassisted goal.

The quick offensive spurt settled considerably from that point and the teams headed into intermission tied 1-1. At the outset of the second half, the Brewers struck quickly again, just 3:16 into the second half, with Maier setting up a crossing pass across the middle to senior forward Katy Hwang for her second goal of the season and a 2-1 Vassar lead.

The Royals responded with a tenacious attack, one that led to a 21-7 advantage in shots, 13 of those coming in the second half. Tomboia scored her second goal of the game and tied the contest 2-2 with a soft shot into the net in the game's 51st minute off an assist from junior back Corrine O'Kane.

Five minutes later, Kempf pushed Scranton ahead 3-2 with her athletic play.

Brelis made 11 saves for the Brewers, eight of which came in the second half. The Scranton goalie combination of senior Alexandria Marandino and freshman Maria Begilomini each allowed a goal, but didn't register a save. Scranton held a 12-9 lead in penalty corners.

In the highest scoring contest in a series that began in 2008, each school has now won two games.
