POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 22, 2011) – With a potential Liberty League playoff berth hanging in the balance, the Vassar College field hockey team closed within one goal of No. 6 nationally-ranked Skidmore College with 13 minutes to play, but the Brewers came up a goal shy of a dramatic finish, falling to the Thoroughbreds 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Weinberg Field.
A goal by sophomore midfielder
Tina Caso in the game's 56th minute brought the Brewers within one goal of tying the contest, but the regular season champion Thoroughbreds were able to close out the contest with the victory, which eliminated Vassar from playoff contention. The Brewers were in the final playoff mix with St. Lawrence and Rochester.
The loss drops Vassar to 7-7, 2-4 and concludes Liberty League play. Skidmore improves to 14-1, 6-0. The Brewers will play their final two games against non-league foes, starting with the final home game of the season against Scranton on October 25 at 7:00 p.m. Skidmore next plays at Hartwick on October 26 at 4:00 p.m.
While Skidmore dominated the game statistically, holding a 21-4 lead in shots and a 16-3 margin in penalty corners, a determined Vassar defense held strong against significant offensive pressure. Fifteen of Skidmore's shots were on goal and the Thoroughbreds had eight penalty corners in each half. However, the Vassar defense held firm throughout the game.
It took the Thoroughbreds until the games 32nd minute to get on the board. Senior forward Annie Rosencrans scored her 10th goal of the season off an assist from senior midfielder Katie Flowers for a 1-0 lead. Rosencrans capitalized on a back post deflection, and scored her goal from the top of the circle.
Skidmore increased its lead to 2-0 17 minutes into the second half when sophomore forward Kelly Blackhurst tallied her 21st goal of the season off a feed from Rosencrans in front of Vassar sophomore goalie
Maggie Brelis. Rosencrans earned her 100th career point following the assist.
The Brewers came alive three minutes later, when Caso scored her second goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder
Cameron Felt had her shot blocked on the near post, but the ball ricocheted across the goal mouth to Caso, who was standing at the back post and tucked the ball past freshman Skidmore goalie Haley McDonald.
Brelis made 13 clutch saves in the contest. McDonald only faced one shot on goal, the score by Caso.
Prior to the game, the Brewers honored their six graduating senioirs,

Caroline Kessler,
Elizabeth Feltch,
