Brewers Show Talent In Tight First Half of 94-69 Loss to No. 21 Ramapo

MAHWAH, NJ (January 7, 2011) -- Even though the Vassar College men's basketball team put together its best offensive performance this season, it was not quite enough as the d3hoops.com No. 21 nationally ranked Ramapo College prevailed 94-69 Friday evening at the Bradley Center.

The Brewers trailed 49-31 at the half despite shooting a season-best 50 percent on 12-24 from the field. The Brewers made some adjustments at halftime and played a competitive second half as they were outscored by a mere seven points, 45-38. Vassar minimized turnovers in the second half with only six turnovers to Ramapo's 10 and managed eight points off turnovers to Ramapo's four points.

The Brewers (1-9) host the Culinary Institute of America this Saturday, January 8 at 6:00 p.m. in the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Roadrunners (11-3) face Montclair State University on the road this Monday, January 10 at 7:00 p.m.

After three ties inside the first three minutes, Vassar junior guard Caleb McGraw knocked down a jumper to provide Vassar's only lead of the night at 9-7. The Brewers kept within striking range and tied the game again at 17-17 with 12:36 remaining as freshman swingman Evan Carberry sunk a triple on an assist from McGraw.

Back to back three-pointers by Ramapo's Ahmad Hassan keyed a 10-2 run to put Ramapo ahead 29-19 with 8:48 remaining. McGraw responded on the next possession with a three-pointer to cut the lead to seven points at 29-22. The Brewers pulled within four points at 33-29 with 5:41 remaining following a McGraw triple and a jumper by junior captain Nick Justiz. The Roadrunners rallied for a 16-2 run to end the half ahead 49-31. Turnovers plagued Vassar in the first half as Ramapo converted 20 points off 15 Brewer turnovers to Vassar's seven points off nine Ramapo turnovers.

Ramapo nursed a lead around 20 points for the entirety of the second half with efficient shooting and good production inside. In total, the Roadrunners shot 62.3 percent from field and held a 37-27 rebounding advantage. Although the Brewers held a slight 14-12 edge on offensive boards, Ramapo capitalized with 20 second chance points to Vassar's 11. Ramapo dominated inside with 26 points in the paint to Vassar's four points.

Five Roadrunners reached double figures in scoring and the trio of Hassan, Travis Conyers, and Elgin Brown posted 15 points each. Stephon Treadwell added 14 points and Will Sanborn chipped in for 12 points as the pair tied for a game high six rebounds. Conyers dished a game-high eight assists.

McGraw carried the Brewers with 28 points on an efficient 11-16 from the field including 4-6 from three-point range. Sophomore John Donnelly recorded 14 points and tied for the game high with six boards. Senior captain Chris Whitney tallied a game-high four blocks and Justiz notched seven assists.
