Brewers End ECAC Holiday Festival With 76-50 Loss to Baldwin-Wallace

KISSIMMEE, FL (January 3, 2011) -- Despite warming up in the second half, the Vassar College men's basketball team could not recover from a slow first half and a 21-point halftime deficit as it dropped 76-50 to Baldwin-Wallace in the ECAC Holiday Festival Monday afternoon at the Kissimmee Civic Center.

The Brewers were outscored 43-22 in the first half but posted 28 points in the second half while limiting the Yellow Jackets to 33 points. Vassar shot an icy 27.6 percent from the floor and went 1-8 from three-point range in the first half while Baldwin-Wallace shot an efficient 55.2 percent. The Brewers improved to 38.1 percent from the field and 50.0 from three-point range in the second half. 

The Brewers (1-8) return to action on the road against Ramapo on Friday, January 7 at 7:00 p.m. The Yellow Jackets (5-7) face University of Massachusetts-Boston in the ECAC Holiday Festival championship game tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 12:00 noon.

Baldwin-Wallace opened the game with a three-pointer by freshman guard Kevin Krakowiak on an assist from junior All-Ohio Athletic Conference point guard Promis Cabbil. Vassar responded on the next possession with a layup down low by senior captain Chris Whitney to pull the Brewers within one at 3-2. This was the closest the Brewers would come to the lead all game as the Yellow Jackets promptly reeled off 12 straight points to build a 14-2 advantage at the 16:00 mark.

Down 24-6 at 11:44, the Brewers put together a 6-0 run to close within 12 points at 24-12 with 8:39 left on a jumper by junior guard Caleb McGraw. A four-point run by Baldwin-Wallace pushed the lead back out to 16 points at 28-12 with 7:45 left on a layup by junior guard Scott Voiers. The largest lead of the first stanza was 22 points on two separate occasions with the last at 41-19 at the 1:08 mark with a layup by sophomore forward Sean Rothermel.

The Yellow Jackets controlled the inside with a 44-20 points in the paint advantage and a 42-29 rebounding edge. Baldwin-Wallace scored 14 second chance points on 11 offensive rebounds to Vassar's three points on eight offensive boards.

For Baldwin-Wallace, sophomore forward Chris Ameen scored a game high 13 points and pulled down six rebounds. Freshman center Aaron Selmek had career-highs of 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds. The third player in double figures, freshman forward Kyle Payne tallied 10 points.

For Vassar, freshman forward Evan Carberry was the only player to reach double digits with a career-high 10 points.
