Men's Basketball Out-Paced By Thoroughbreds in 86-52 Loss

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (January 28) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team withstood an early onslaught by a hot-shooting Skidmore team but the game slipped away in final minutes of the first half as the Thoroughbreds raced to an 86-52 win Friday night at the Williamson Sports Center.  

The Brewers never held a lead but kept within striking range in the first half until an 11-2 run by Skidmore at 36-26 with 4:34 remaining put the Thoroughbreds up 49-28 at the half. Skidmore bolstered its leads with three pointers, shooting 14-25 for the game.

The Brewers (3-14, 1-5 Liberty) wrap up their Liberty League road trip at Union College tomorrow, January 29, at 4:00 p.m. The Thoroughbreds (10-7, 4-2 Liberty) host RPI tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

Down 10-2 to early in the contest, the lead hovered around 10 points until a triple by junior guard Caleb McGraw brought Vassar within six at 22-16 with 7:53 left in the period. A jumper by Skidmore's Gerard O'Shea and back to back threes by Brian Lowry sandwiched a triple by Vassar freshman Evan Carberry and pushed the Skidmore lead to double digits at 30-19 with 6:06 remaining.

McGraw and junior guard Nick Justiz traded threes with Skidmore's Melvis Langyintuo to keep the lead within 10 points at 36-26. The Thoroughbreds broke away with an 11-2 run sparked by consecutive layups by Quenten Howard to end the half ahead 49-28.

Skidmore continued its sharp play in the second half and led by as many as 37 after a three-pointer from Lowry with 4:24 remaining and cruised to the 86-52 win. The Thoroughbreds shot 63.0% from the floor and 56.0% on threes as they outscored Vassar's bench 50-23 and held a 34-14 advantage on points in the paint. All 11 Skidmore players finished with at least four points.

For Skidmore, Lowry came off the bench to lead all scorers with 14 points on 4-5 from beyond the arc. O'Shea pulled down a game high seven rebounds and dished a game high five assists.

Vassar junior captain Nick Justiz led Vassar with 10 points on 4-7 shooting- the only Brewer to reach double figures.
