POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 22, 2011) -- The Vassar College men's basketball team fell behind early to Hamilton College and never regained footing as the Continentals won 84-44 Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Vassar had two leads in the early stages as junior guard
Caleb McGraw scored a layup on one pass after the opening tip. A smooth pull-up jumper by McGraw put the Brewers up once more at 4-2 on the game's third possession. This was Vassar's last lead of the game as Hamilton began to pull away with a 15-4 run initiated by a triple by freshman guard Matt Dean and capped off with a fast break finish by sophomore guard Hans Schulte to put Hamilton up 18-9 with 14:21 remaining. With a balanced attack in which nine of 11 players scored at least five points, the Continentals shot an exceptional 60.7 percent from the field and 54.5 percent from three-point land.
The Brewers (3-13, 1-4 Liberty) hit the road to face Skidmore on Friday, January 28, at 8:00 p.m. and Union on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. In preparation for its move to the NESCAC, The Continentals (9-5, 3-2 Liberty) hosts Middlebury College Tuesday, January 25, at 7:00 p.m. at Scott Field House.
Hamilton piled on the lead with relentless efficiency as an 8-0 run at 34-21 with 7:40 remaining put the Continentals up 21 points at 42-21 with 3:40 remaining. The Hamilton machine of interchangeable parts led 44-23 at the half and kept on running in the second half. A 36-8 points in the paint edge and a 39-22 rebounding advantage fueled the machine. Hamilton converted a reasonable 16 Vassar turnovers into 23 points while Vassar found only three points off 10 Hamilton turnovers. Although Vassar shot 33.3 percent from the floor, the Brewers connected on 8 of 17 three-pointers, two more than Hamilton.
Hamilton sophomore center Ken Click dialed in his hook shot to lead all scorers with 16 points on 8-10 shooting. Freshman forward Tom McInerney came off the bench for 12 points.
A bright spot for Vassar was sophomore guard
Jon Herzog who crafted his second straight double-digit scoring performance after returning from injury. With 15 points on 6-8 shooting, Herzog should give the offense a boost going forward. Junior captain
Nick Justiz did not miss as he buried three triples for nine points.
