POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 21, 2011) –The Vassar College men's basketball team had trouble slowing one of the Liberty League's hottest offenses in an 88-57 loss to Hobart College Friday evening at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
After a slow start for both clubs, the Statesmen jumped out to a duble digit lead midway though the first half and nurtured this comfortable margin for the remainder of the game thanks to a 44-28 rebounding advantage and a 40-16 points in the paint advantage.
The Brewers (3-11, 1-2) wrap up the homestand against Hamilton on Saturday, January 22, at 4:00 p.m. The first place Statesmen (11-3, 3-0) travel to RPI on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. game.
With neither team cracking double digits after the first six minutes of play, freshman guard
Evan Carberry hit a jumper from the baseline to bring Vassar within three points of the lead at 9-6 with 13:48 remaining. Hobart scored the next three baskets unanswered for a 16-6 lead behind the work of speedy freshman Blair Helton who drove inside for a layup, assisted classmate Richie Bonney for an easy lay in, and connected on a three.
The Statesmen grew the lead to 20 points at 34-14 with 5:00 remaining using great dribble penetration that that freed senior guard Tim Llewellyn for three triples. Junior forward Matt Pebole also benefitted with two open layups and several looks inside during that span. Helton continued to attack the basket and he closed out the period with an old-fashioned three point play and a layup to put Hobart ahead 39-18 at the break.
The Hobart lead lingered the twenties for most of the second half and climbed into the thirties with less than 3 minutes to play. The Statesmen, who lead the league in assist/turnover ratio, won the turnover battle with a 32-14 advantage in points off turnovers, capitalizing on 22 Vassar turnovers and committing 14 of their own. As one of the league's top rebounding teams, Hobart had a 15-6 edge in offensive rebounds that led to an 18 second chance points to Vassar's six.

Jon Herzog added 10 points.
Pebole posted a game-high 20 points and six rebounds. Helton tallied 18 points and senior forward Adam Salzmann chipped in with a game-high eight rebounds.
