POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 15, 2011) – Senior captain
Carolyn Crampton essentially hit two game-winners to lift the Vassar College women's basketball team to a 77-74 double-overtime victory over St. Lawrence University Saturday afternoon at the Athletics and Fitness Center.
Crampton's first game-winner came with 2 seconds left in regulation but was nullified by a pair of free throws by St. Lawrence's Iris Santoni with less than a second remaining thanks to a technical foul on the Vassar bench for entering the court after Crampton's shot. Crampton's second game-winner broke a 73-73 tie with under a minute left in the second overtime to put Vassar ahead 76-73.
For the second straight year, the Brewers (7-5) have started Liberty League play 2-0. Vassar will host RPI this Tuesday, January 18 at 6:00 p.m. at the Athletics and Fitness Center. The Saints (9-3) return to Liberty League play next weekend as they host Union on Friday, January 21 at 6:00 p.m. and Skidmore on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
With the exception of two ties, Vassar trailed the entire game until the final minute of regulation when sophomore guard
Ali Higgins scored her first and only basket of the game, a 3-pointer to tie the game 58-58 with 23 seconds remaining. On the following possession, freshman forward
Hannah Senftleber came up with a steal and Vassar called timeout with three seconds remaining. Higgins inbounded to Crampton who nailed the jumper from the free throw line to seemingly win the game for Vassar. A heart-breaking technical foul on Vassar with .3 seconds remaining put St. Lawrence's Santoni on the line who sent the game to overtime with a pair of clutch free throws.
Junior captain
Brittany Parks scored at will in the first overtime, netting six of Vassar's eight points and maintaining Vassar's lead until Saint freshman forward Kelley Legg hit a triple with a minute left to even the score at 68-68 and take the game to a second overtime. Freshman guard
Cydni Matsuoka lined up a long three at the buzzer but it hit the back of the rim.
In the second overtime, St. Lawrence scored first with a pair of free throws by junior guard Katherine Edgerton for a 70-68 lead. The Brewers regained a three point lead at 73-70 with 2:19 remaining on an old-fashioned three point play by Parks and a layup by Senftleber. St. Lawrence's Katie Abramski tied it at 73-73 with 2:01 remaining on a layup and foul shot. Following several scoreless possessions, Crampton nailed her go-ahead 3-pointer on an assist from Higgins with 41 seconds remaining. The teams swapped free throws in final minute to close the game.
Parks posted a career-high 32 points with eight rebounds and four assists. Matsuoka tallied 17 points and two game highs with six assists and five steals. Senftleber recorded 14 points and 11 rebounds, her second straight double-double and fifth this season. Crampton scored five crucial points and pulled down eight boards.
