SCRANTON, PA (September 3, 2010) – In terms of offensive pressure, head Vassar field hockey coach Cara Dunn couldn't have asked more from her young team against Keystone College on Friday evening. The Brewers jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but allowed a goal with eight minutes remaining and fell to the Giants, 2-1, in a game played indoors at Riverfront Sports Complex due to weather conditions.

Vassar (0-2) will take positive momentum into the opening round game of the 22nd annual Betty Richey Tournament on Saturday, September 11. The Brewers will face Manhattanville in the opener at Noon. Smith College will face Elms at 2:00 p.m. Keystone improves to 1-1 and will travel to Wells College next Saturday.

The Brewers, who had 14 shots in the contest, got on the board first when sophomore Rebecca Smith scored the season's first goal off an assist by junior Maura McCarthy 15:05 into the game. Keystone was able to tie the game 1-1 at halftime following a goal from LeeAnna Bennett.
The contest was tightly played in the second half, but the Giants broke the deadlock when Kate Darling notched the game winning at 61:58.

“We had good offensive pressure during the game and certainly had our opportunities,” said Dunn. “We were good with our transitions from defense through the midfield and into offense and fought the entire game. This team has a strong desire to win and look forward to the Betty Richey Tournament.”

Junior forward Emily Maier had three shots for the Brewers and freshman Anna Schroeder had a pair. Besides those two, Dunn praised the efforts of senior midfielder Jessica Lance, freshman midfielder Tina Caso, junior midfielder Elizabeth Feltch and freshman midfielder Kerrin Poole

Senior goalie Rachel Horwitz had two saves for the Brewers. Keystone goalie Melinda Moore had six saves. Vassar held a 14-6 advantage in penalty corners.
